Summary
The Calling Stage Manager will report to the Company Manager and will be responsible for all activities within the touring shows to ensure smooth and consistent performances of the show as produced, and to supervise, coach, and lead all cast members in their daily work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.
  • Ensure the show is presented as originally produced. Any changes in staging, choreography, or any technical aspects of the show (with the exception of immediate safety concerns) must be authorized in advance by the Artistic Department. Notifies each department head as to the role changes during the appearance of understudies or cast changes.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Conducts blocking, cleaning rehearsals, and notes sessions on a regular basis. Conducts understudy rehearsals as soon as possible after the opening performance ensures all understudies are ready to perform their assigned tracks.
  • Provide direction to each tour department in regard to the condition of their equipment and the execution of their department’s performance during shows. The Crew Chief, Production Manager, and the Performance Director will work together to coordinate the performance of the show, as well as the safety of all staff and patrons.
  • Train all replacement performers and conducts any necessary put-in rehearsals, utilizing the help of existing road performers familiar with the required tracks to assist with the rehearsals whenever feasible, to ensure an expeditious put-in. Put-in schedules should be coordinated with the Company Manager and the Entertainment and Operations departments.
  • Work with performers on a continual basis by conducting blocking, cleaning rehearsals, and notes sessions. Conduct understudy rehearsals as soon as possible after the opening performance and ensure all understudies are ready to perform their assigned tracks.
  • Responsible for the overall quality of the show while on the road, including performers, sets, costumes, lighting, sound, etc. This includes approved implementation of the different staging required for upsize, downsize, and audience access versions of show products.
  • Perform traditional stage manager duties, including calling cues before and during the show.
  • Report to the Artistic Department as to the ongoing look of the show and submit a Performance Report for each venue.
  • Assign cast members to, publicities, and other promotional requests. Coordinates and/or participates in promotions, social media, and publicity assignments. Works in conjunction with the cast, road office, home office, and local promoter to ensure a smooth and successful event. Communicates back to the home office with concerns and difficulties.
  • Prepare for each different venue to ensure show quality and safety. Attend load in, perform safety checks, review past show reports to identify any problems with building layout.
  • Participate in pre-production and rehearsals as necessary, being responsible for tracking all stage cues, choreography and staging changes and able to teach such tracks for all characters.
  • Provides direct supervision to cast/artists.
  • Because of the interdependence of wardrobe and cast, the Performance Director must share responsibility and work closely with Company Management and Wardrobe in publicity assignments and in setting priorities for costume use and maintenance.
Expectations:
  • Make Decisions: Assess situations to determine the importance, urgency, and risks, and make clear decisions that are timely and in the best interests of the department.
  • Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.
