Job Description
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Note for US based roles: Any offer of employment is contingent on providing proof of Covid-19 vaccination prior to your start date, subject to approved medical and/or religious exemptions, in accordance with applicable law.

The newsroom’s Culture and Careers department is seeking an enterprising project manager to manage a varied portfolio that includes recruitment, early career development, internal mobility as well as sustaining a workplace where journalists can do their best work. In this role you will play a lead role in driving key newsroom initiatives, in partnership with Human Resources.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who has demonstrated ability to organize projects from end-to-end, managing timetables, identifying blockers, and providing visibility to multiple stakeholders at varying levels across the company. You should be skilled at documentation, using G-suite and other products to design decks and other materials required for internal and external communication. And you should be able to facilitate communication from key leaders in the department and others, scheduling meetings, assisting with arranging off-site logistics and more. In this role you will be tapped as the main point of contact between multiple collaborating departments, within the newsroom and across the broader organization. Because the role requires handling sensitive material, collegiality and diplomacy are essential.

This is an excluded role based in New York.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and solve problems related to projects using data and insights, including identifying better ways of working for existing processes, and detecting systemic issues, process problems, and other risks in an effort to find resolutions.
  • Promote a free flow of information with and among partners and team members on all matters.
  • Assist in building out new systems and practices and training others to get them up-to-speed quickly.
  • Support internal mobility and employee learning efforts through design and implementation of trainings and onboarding.
  • Maintain comprehensive project documentation, including updated project plans, file management, and presentations.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with HR and newsroom leaders, Newsroom Strategy, and other other stakeholders.
  • Track and communicate project status, risks, and emergent issues that are readily accessible and current, ensuring shared understanding of project goals and success criteria across all stakeholders.
  • Manage and execute integrated projects from start to finish, serving as the primary point of contact between all parties involved to ensure deliverables and components are on track and within scope.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ability to understand issues at both strategic and operational levels.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to quickly learn and/or apply Times style.
  • 5+ experience collaborating across teams on executing ambitious projects.
  • Ability to multitask and manage several deadlines simultaneously.
  • Clear and succinct communication with the ability to build presentations.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a sharp eye for detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to effectively interact with all levels of management and other staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Proficient in project management tools or collaborative tools that are useful for editorial project management, such as Airtable, Google Suite, and others.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute items quickly, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in media or news-gathering is a plus.
  • Preferred background in CMS production and technical troubleshooting.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $82,000.00 and $110,000.00.

The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve. Our journalism and the products we build in the service of that journalism greatly benefit from a range of perspectives, which can only come from diversity of all types, across our ranks, at all levels of the organization. Achieving true diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do. It is also the smart thing for our business. So we strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.

The New York Times Company is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of an individual's sex, age, race, color, creed, national origin, alienage, religion, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation or affectional preference, gender identity and expression, disability, genetic trait or predisposition, carrier status, citizenship, veteran or military status and other personal characteristics protected by law. All applications will receive consideration for employment without regard to legally protected characteristics. The New York Times Company will provide reasonable accommodations as required by applicable federal, state, and/or local laws, and will consider qualified applicants, including those with criminal histories, in a manner consistent with the requirements of applicable "Fair Chance" laws.
