Job Description
The
mission
of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Note for US based roles: Any offer of employment is contingent on providing proof of Covid-19 vaccination prior to your start date,
subject to approved medical and/or religious exemptions, in accordance with applicable law.

The New York Times is seeking a director, HRBP to support and partner with employees and leaders across the newsroom. Reporting to the vice president and head of Newsroom HRBPs, you will be a player-coach, responsible for hiring and mentoring other HRBPs, while also supporting employees across the newsroom. While you will support the HRBP function across the company as a whole, the focus will be on enacting meaningful change with the newsroom specifically.
The HRBP helps drive a people strategy aligned with our goals , mission and values. With pragmatism and an ability to nimbly work through ambiguity, the HRBP provides daily HR support for the leaders, managers and employees of client groups, including guidance and coaching, management of the performance enablement cycle, and oversight of process/HR administration. Working with HR Leadership Team (HRLT) members, HRBP and Center of Excellence (COE)/Subject Matter Expert (SME) peers, and client group leadership, the HRBP helps to develop and execute people initiatives within their client group(s), ensuring everyone has the same understanding of what success looks like. Acting as a trusted advisor and thought partner to client group leadership – and providing insights and perspective to HR and company leadership – the HRBP identifies issues and opportunities impacting the business, and offers practical ways to address them. The HRBP uses every interaction to role model our values and behaviors, and takes advantage of every type of activity (even those that are administrative/transactional) to drive change and ensure an equitable and inclusive culture.
As a director on this team, and a leader within the Newsroom HR group, you will not only drive this within your own client group, but you will be responsible for encouraging and enabling your direct team to do the same.
Responsibilities:
  • Partner with leaders to build high performing leadership teams, and coach executives to enhance their leadership effectiveness.
  • Gain a deep understanding of how the clients across your portfolio and the full newsroom operate and work together. Scan for future trends internally and externally.
  • Be an active member of and leader on the HR team influencing and challenging colleagues.
  • Partner with business leaders to develop succession/talent planning efforts that ensure the teams have the talent needed to support their strategy.
  • Promote a culture of regular feedback and reinforce our mission and values.
  • Build relationships with newsroom and masthead leaders. Be a trusted and credible partner who anticipates needs and recommends solutions.
  • Provide credible guidance, advice, and support.
  • Lead the compensation cycle efforts across the newsroom, in close partnership with the Compensation team, Newsroom Strategy, Finance, and other key stakeholders.
  • Implement performance enablement and learning programs within your client group, working directly with COE and newsroom leaders in the initial design phase to support the newsroom as a whole throughout the performance management cycle, and ensure appropriate follow-up actions such as performance/development plans.
  • Support the diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy, programs and initiatives of The Times.
  • Develop and use people metrics to provide insights that help guide decisions.
  • Partner with business leaders and work with HR centers of excellence to identify organizational needs for business development, and for reaching enterprise goals.
  • Be a bridge between the newsroom and the rest of the business, using experience with the inner workings of the newsroom to support and inform business decisions
  • Partner with client group leaders and COEs to assess internal talent and minimize bias in internal mobility, career paths, talent calibration/planning exercises, DEI programs, and succession planning, and lead the execution of such programs.
  • Participate as an active and regular member of the newsroom Culture & Careers department.
  • Manage a team of HRBPs and offer mentorship to support learning and development, in addition to supporting the daily needs of a specific newsroom client group.
Basic Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of experience in an HR Business Partner role working with senior leaders.
  • Ability to balance the needs of the company, managers, and employees.
  • Has the mindset of a peer and thought partner, regardless of level. Effectively challenges existing points of view and offers ideas on how to address challenges and opportunities.
  • 5+ years of progressive management experience, with a focus on inclusive leadership and growing teams.
  • Proven negotiation, conflict resolution, influencing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Broad expertise in organizational behavior, change management, talent management, policy implementation, employee relations and communications.
  • Ability to organize and track quantitative data, analyze and identify trends, and provide actionable recommendations based on data analysis.
  • Willingness to take unpopular stands when necessary and to challenge the status quo.
  • Excellent customer focus to build strong rapport with clients.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with unions
  • Experience in media
The annual base pay range for this role is between $170,000.00 and $190,000.00.
