Job Description
Summary of Job Duties and Responsibilities
This position is responsible for designing and administering all academic components of the Upward Bound program and assists with the management, administration and implementation of the Upward Bound program.
  • Staffing, financial management operations, development of curriculum, lectures, workshops, and other education materials specific to academic programs and academic advising
  • Measures and evaluates the effectiveness of student programs against protected outcomes; regularly prepares reports on impact to students and budget and presents to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student programming goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student programs.
  • Travel to represent programs at federal grantee meetings and attend conferences for professional development.
  • Track and manage travel expenditures for the Upward Bound Project.
  • Develops the academic curricular and ensures it aligns with educational standards for the academic year and six-week intensive summer component. They have the responsibility of analyzing and evaluating programming and using professional knowledge and experience to make changes to the curriculum to ensure effectiveness in meeting states objectives and learning outcomes.
  • Candidate has to be willing to work a flexible schedule, drive long distances (with and without participants) and chaperone mobile classroom trips)
  • Interfaces directly with students, attend student programming events and gather satisfactory feedback from student participants to implement into future student programming initiatives and objectives.
  • Budget management including preparation, reconciliation, and processing of invoices for payment for the Upward Bound Project; Processes and submits monthly budget reports to Grants Accounting.
  • Oversee the tutoring component. This includes hiring, training managing tutors, the development and implementation of successful tutoring strategies and ensuring effectiveness of the component.
  • Run campus/local errands to support the work of the Upward Bound Project.
  • Hire, trains, supervises, and manages Instructors/tutors/summer assistants. Assist with managing a part-time staff.
  • Provide support in creating and/or editing correspondence, reports, presentations and promotional materials for the Upward Bound program as assigned by the Project Director.
  • Assist with the recruitment of program participants. This includes making presentations, application reviews, student and parent interviews, and final selections.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate senior component initiatives which include updates UB educational plans, advising high school seniors and families, and developing senior workshops to ensure high school graduation and successfully enter into post-secondary education.
  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives geared at enhancing and reinforcing the academic engagement and experiential learning capacity of the student experience. Projects programming outcomes at the program, department/division, or campus level.
  • Assist the director with the completion of the Department of Education Annual Performance Report. Monitor and refine program methods. Works with the director in the formulation and implementing policies and procedures, decision making, collection and assessment of data, and record management.
  • Support the work of the Upward Bound Project by representing Director through taking and making phone calls, setting meetings, and off campus with school personnel, community partners and friends of the University.
  • Coordinate, implement and monitor all required services, interventions and activities administered through the Upward Bound Project including tutorial services, testing prep, financial literacy and core curriculum, trauma informed care in education, student engagement, cross system collaboration, youth mental health first aid, etc.
  • Assist with developing, planning and coordinating cultural and social enrichment activities.
  • Coordinating visits on and off campus with program participants.
  • Recruit participants and deliver services to meet the project’s participants’ needs and provide direct support to the Director to assist with meeting all project objectives.
Minimum Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.


Minimum Experience and Skill Requirements
  • Must attend trainings and professional development.
  • Knowledge of college admissions, academic requirements and financial aid process.
  • Working knowledge of different TRiO programs and programs regulations and requirements.
  • Ability to efficiently work on multiple tasks and deadlines, exercise sound independent judgment, and strong commitment to developing collaborative relationships.
  • Experience in program administration and fiscal development including workshops, meetings; managing current expense budgets and supervising part-time staff.
  • Keyboarding, filing, microcomputer, office procedures; bookkeeping may be required.
  • Ability to work well in a digital space – high comfortability with office and meeting technologies.
  • Must be proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • Experience working with youth who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education and low income/first generation students.
  • Two years of position-related experience, preferable in an office setting.
  • Demonstrated professional ability to succeed while managing multiple major projects
  • Experience working with secondary students, parents, and high school personnel.
  • Must be able to travel to target schools
  • Ability to understand and interpret federal regulations
  • Ability to provide service and support to students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability in planning, written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of appropriate strategies to enhance student retention and completion for individuals who qualify for TRiO Upward Bound.
  • Strongly skilled decision-maker; ability to identify problems and solutions.
  • Should be able to indicate professional and personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the student population from which participants will be served.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, solutions-focused.
  • Formal training and/or work experience in fields related to: Academic performance; Secondary school retention and graduation; Postsecondary enrollment and Postsecondary completion for low-income and potential first-generation college students.
  • Excellent time management and oral/written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex tasks and work well with professionals from various related fields.
Preferred Education and/or Experience Qualifications
  • A degree in education, counseling, social work, higher education administration, or an appropriate field related to project objectives preferred.
