Job Description

United Way of Brevard, Florida (UWB) was established in 1957 by a group of caring and committed individuals who wanted to help those who were in need in their local community. Our work focuses on the building blocks of a good life – Education, Income and Health. Our community wins when kids succeed in school, adults can secure a good job, manage their finances, and provide a healthy environment for their families. Together, through United Way Worldwide and United Way Florida, the contributions of thousands of individual donors become a force for change in the community.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director is the leader of the organization, providing inspiring visionary and dynamic leadership and management to a high-performing team of volunteers, staff and community members by clarifying priorities and creating and monitoring progress towards organizational and individual goals.

  • Oversee the overall administrative management and daily operations of the organization, to include all activities in accordance with UWB policies and Bylaws.
  • Maintain operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within the directives and policies set by the Board of Directors.
  • Accountable to the Board of Directors through the Chair, and has the authority, within the framework of the UWB’s policies and bylaws, to take necessary action to achieve the goals of the organization.
  • Develop financial resources and identify human service priorities and solutions.
  • Mobilize community resources to improve the quality of life in Brevard County.
  • Carry out the programs, goals, objectives, policies and decisions of the Board of Directors.
  • Provide for accountability, distribution of resources, and responses to community needs and issues.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management and Resource Development

  • Provide leadership in developing financial resources to help meet the health and human service needs of the community.
  • Maintain United Way’s leadership role among constituencies, including donors, decision makers, agencies, private and public institutions.
  • Direct financial operations, prepare annual operating budget and accountable for control of these resources once approved.
  • Collaborate and coordinate effective delivery of services with appropriate community committees, boards and councils.
  • Promote United Way through community presentations and activities.
  • Responsible for directing the public relations functions of the agency.

Planning and Program Development

  • Builds and maintains relationships with members and leaders of the community.
  • Ensure that UWB’s facilities, property and equipment are properly maintained.
  • Recommend changes to existing programs or services and propose implementation of new programs and services to best achieve UWB’s goals and mission.
  • Guide the development of, and oversee the implementation and execution of, UWB’s strategic plan and work plan.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable duties and obligations the agency may be subject to, including any legal, tax, regulatory or reporting obligations and compliance with membership requirements of United Way Worldwide and United Way of Florida.

Relationship with the Board of Directors

  • Administers an orientation program for the Board of Directors.
  • Maintain appropriate transparency, communication and relations with the Board of Directors and its committees and keep them informed.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Board of Directors and carry out Board directives and policies.
  • Develop and recommend to the Board of Directors plans for the development of UWB programs and services.
  • Work with the Board to develop policies on issues affecting UWB operations and the agency’s approach to best meeting and serving the community’s needs and issues.

Personnel Management

  • Ensure that goals of inclusiveness and diversity among staff and volunteers are met.
  • Provide overall leadership and direction for the personnel and human resource functions of UWB, including active participation in or approval of key personnel actions and appropriate delegation of management functions and responsibilities to properly trained and qualified personnel.
  • Develop, implement and maintain strategies to increase employee and volunteer engagement.
  • Supervise and direct staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Chief administrative responsibility for ensuring compliance with human resource laws and codes, and with UWB’s personnel policies.
  • Develop and implement an effective performance review process.
  • Foster and maintain a professional and equitable work environment and culture.

Job Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in businesses, finance, human services, or related field required. Advanced degree in business, finance, or nonprofit management preferred.
  • Working knowledge of non‐profit fiscal management.
  • Experience in collaboration, negotiation, and United Way skills and systems preferred but not required.
  • 5 or more years leading nonprofit organizations or programs, including working with a Board of Directors.
  • 5 or more years of team leadership, including hiring and performance management.
  • Demonstrated success with grant writing, monitoring, compliance and reporting through relevant supporting agencies.
  • Proven track record in recruiting, developing, mentoring and retaining high performing, mission-driven, and results-oriented teams,
  • Demonstrated success with fundraising and management of fund distribution.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Some evening and weekend work required.
  • Collaborate well with others and ability to develop and maintain smooth and constructive relationships with colleagues and outside agencies, organizations, and individuals.
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet various demands of executive management.
  • Plan and implement programs on an agency-wide basis.
  • Extensive local travel.
  • Establish strong and appropriate supervisor relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication.
  • Ability to articulate and make well-reasoned judgments and decisions in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to analyze, comprehend and handle detailed, complex concepts and problems while balancing, prioritizing and managing multiple projects and deadlines.
