Job Description
Residing in Silicon Valley, the heart of innovation, Stanford GSB has built a global reputation based on its immersive and innovative management programs. We provide students a transformative leadership experience, push the boundaries of knowledge with faculty research, and offer a portfolio of entrepreneurial and non-degree programs that deliver global impact like no other. We strive to change lives, change organizations, and change the world.
We're looking for an Associate Director of Communications to join our Strategic Communications team. In this role you will develop, execute, and assess proactive communications strategies aimed at enhancing our brand and elevating our reputation on a local, national, and global scale. You will partner with the Director of Strategic Communications to collaborate with other department leaders on strategic school-wide communications initiatives.
You will bring media relations experience, creativity, intellectual curiosity, and an ability to thrive in a dynamic environment. You will need to be able to think about the big picture while also managing a steady flow of inquiries and requests. You’re confident and comfortable working with reporters on deadline. You have excellent judgment and you are able to understand the perspectives of a diverse set of constituents. You have experience in integrating earned media initiatives into broader communications campaigns. You have strong collaboration skills, and the ability to partner across the GSB and Stanford University on initiatives and campaigns.
CORE DUTIES
  • Help develop strategic communication plans with methods for measuring the plan's impact on the school.
  • Participate in the development of key messages and strategies to communicate complex information to multiple audiences and constituencies through a wide variety of communications platforms, including digital, print and news media.
  • Build relationships with faculty members to help promote academic thought-leadership and research to external audiences and media outlets.
  • Create compelling written communications for the media, sometimes under pressure.
  • Provide media training and guidance to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Partner closely with the university’s communications office to ensure consistent and complementary strategic plans with overall university outreach and communications.
  • Help plan, oversee, and execute school-wide proactive media relations campaigns.
  • Work with the Director of Strategic Communications to develop strategies for crisis communications and issues management, and be able to help direct response.
  • Leverage relationships with key reporters and editors, media, community and government leaders.
To Be Successful In This Position, You Will Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Ability to synthesize complex ideas and translate them for relevant audiences.
  • Proven ability to maintain and leverage relationships with journalists and media outlets.
  • An ability to think strategically, as well as execute.
  • A collaborative, can-do attitude.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A growth mindset and intellectual curiosity.
  • Strong influencing, negotiating, and relationship management skills.
The expected pay range for this position is $99,000 to $135,000 per annum.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
At Stanford University, base pay represents only one aspect of the comprehensive rewards package. Specifics about the rewards package for this position may be discussed during the hiring process.
