Associate Director, Communications & Marketing

The Hammer Museum seeks an Associate Director of Marketing and Communications to develop, manage, and maintain an integrated, multi- platform communications and marketing program to promote the Museum's collections, exhibitions, programs, special initiatives, and grow the overall audience attendance and visibility. Responsibilities include overseeing the creation and implementation of all advertising efforts including print and digital advertising campaigns, social media, and email marketing; overseeing the development, production, and distribution of all marketing materials; managing the department marketing budget; and maintaining strategic alliances with media outlets and other cultural institutions for broader reach and greater impact. The ideal candidate will have superb writing and copy editing skills, balanced with the ability to collect and analyze market research and audience demographics to gauge effectiveness of marketing and communications efforts. The Associate Director reports to the Chief Communications Officers and manages a team of four, including a digital communications manager and three graphic designers. The Associate Director or members of their team may also supervise part-time UCLA students and interns.
The Associate Director works closely with colleagues throughout the institution to help articulate core messages that enhance the Museum's identity, and express the Hammer's position as a dynamic cultural institution.

Required/Preferred
Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, art history, a related field or equivalent experience; with an interest in cultural marketing.
Required
A minimum of 7 years of marketing/promotional experience, preferably within a museum, nonprofit organization, or university environment
Required
Working knowledge of some aspects of art history, museums, art galleries, or related humanities field
Required
Knowledge of Los Angeles based media; media buying and planning experience
Required
Experience with strategic media analysis planning and marketing research
Required
Excellent communication skills, including oral, written, editing, and proofreading; demonstrated ability to write lively copy for advertising, PSAs, banners and website promotions, as well as remarks for public speaking; demonstrated ability to compose business correspondence, letters, and memoranda with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation

Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Photoshop, and project management tools such as Asana and Basecamp

Excellent interpersonal skills to interact diplomatically and effectively work with outside contacts and a diverse student, Museum and university population

Ability to discretely and tactfully handle sensitive and confidential information
