Research Director, Wired Jobs

The Research Director at WIRED oversees reporting standards for all of the publication’s editorial content, including print, web, video, and social media. This person also manages the research department, delegating fact-checking assignments for print and web stories, and manages workflow for the research team. In addition, this position fact-checks short and long form stories themselves, and reviews all legally sensitive stories and reporting issues, with Conde Nast senior management and legal department. The director also oversees our policies and procedures, and execution of corrections, when necessary. This person also maintains WIRED’s reporting and ethics guidelines. This position reports to the executive editor.
Responsibilities Include:

• Managing WIRED’s staff of research editors
• Overseeing standards and accuracy for WIRED editorial content.
• Reviews all sensitive stories, and works with senior staff and the appropriate legal advisors at Conde Nast.
• Oversees ethics policies and procedures
• Fact checks feature and other legally sensitive stories
• Manage WIRED’s research-based subscriptions and databases, and the like

Qualifications:

• Experience with, and intellectual curiosity about, technology and science, and corresponding national affairs.
• Prior work experience with fact checking standards and practices, and legal standards in publishing.
• Experience and comfort dealing with confidentiality and highly sensitive information
• Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with a team of fact checkers, copy editors, designers, photo editors, digital producers, social media producers, and other story editors
• Deftness navigating difficult situations—including navigating authors, sources, and other people involved in or who are subjects of a WIRED story—that could arise during story development.
• Willingness to continue learning best management practices, and effective ways to support and oversee research teams
• Prior experience directly managing staff

The expected base salary range for this position is from $80,000 - $114,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
