Job Purpose

This job family consists of three levels of Law Specialists assigned to the Office of General Counsel. The three levels are distinguished by leadership skills, substantive experience, the degree of independent discretion and responsibility, proficiency within a defined legal specialty or process, complexity and risk of assigned projects, and degree of supervision under which work is completed. Specific responsibilities vary depending on the specialty or process of the attorney(s) to whom they report.

The Law Specialists work with lawyers in the Office of General Counsel in the delivery of legal services. The Law Specialists have independent responsibility in actively managing assignments consistent with the ethical rules governing the practice of law and, when making legal decisions or giving legal advice, in consultation with an Associate General Counsel or his/her designee. The work requires substantive legal knowledge, creativity in problem solving and using independent discretion and independent judgment. For this position, the responsibilities include contract drafting and negotiating, providing support for commercial mortgage loans, and building and maintaining relationships within legal, the business and with external parties.

This position is distinguished by having more substantive experience and having significant accountability for higher risk, higher exposure, more complex, novel, and strategic legal issues or transactions. This position is also identified as being a resource expert in one or more major legal process/specialty areas.
