The Buildings Science and Technology Center (BSTC) at NREL works on energy efficiency and decarbonization in buildings across the United States. We publish detailed building end use-level time series load data for commercial and residential buildings. Cities, states, and utilities use these load profiles in their building decarbonization planning and energy program analyses. We are looking for a senior researcher with energy analysis and consulting experience to help lead a new team situated within the Communities and Urban Sciences Research Group.
The day to day role of this team lead will include managing client relationships, overseeing and developing staff members, reviewing work product, and developing new bodies of work, often working with interdisciplinary teams.
This team will help clients adapt and use load profiles data. This team will use the results of NREL’s End Use Load Profiles and End Use Savings Shapes projects to help clients (including federal / state / local entities, utilities, consultants, and NGOs) plan and implement the clean energy transition for residential and commercial buildings at scale. The analysts with the Communities and Urban Sciences Research group will support the team lead in creating custom data products and publications tailored to the needs of these clients. Examples of past successful engagements include the LA100 study, analysis on the energy impacts of COVID-19 building mitigation strategies, Residential Energy Efficiency Potential state fact sheets, and analysis on equitable deep-energy retrofits in Chicago.
Required Skills
  • Experience managing or consulting for utility and other energy programs
  • Understanding of building science principles, theories, and concepts
  • Effectively communicates complex technical topics to both expert and non-expert audiences
  • Experience with team, task or project leadership responsibilities
  • Experience pursuing and developing new and expanding existing client relationships
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Basic Qualifications
Relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience .
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Ability to translate high-level ideas into tangible and specific requirements
  • Experience in project management
  • The ability to deliver inspiring presentations through the use of data led story telling skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Understands the capabilities and limits of building energy modeling approaches
  • Experience with large-scale time-series analysis
  • Previous consulting experience within building energy modeling and analysis is strongly preferred
Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher V / Annual Salary Range: $111,600 - $200,900
