Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. In this position you will plan, organize, assign and evaluate the work of Accounting Tech II’s located at Seattle City Light’s North and South Service Centers. This position will focus on the timekeeping and payroll processing of the Energy Delivery Operations (EDO) Division of the utility. The position will support these functions at both of our service centers as well as have reporting responsibilities at the Seattle Municipal Tower for processing of payroll for this unique set of Seattle City Light employees. This position will report to the Payroll Supervisor in the People and Culture Business Unit.
Here is more about what you’ll be doing:
- Participate on committees, panels, meetings and special projects as assigned.
- Monitor work, provide guidance and technical assistance, conduct performance evaluations, and assess training needs and identify appropriate resources to accomplish objectives.
- Develop unit goals and objectives for the timekeeping work unit including workload forecast, time entry audits, timekeeping processes and procedures.
- Perform accounting tech duties similar to subordinate staff to include timekeeping, overtime rosters, reimbursements for meals and mileage and invoicing for a set group of employees and when leave coverage is needed for subordinate staff.
- Verify, audit, edit and prepare timesheets in communication with field workers and their supervisors to resolve discrepancies and maintain accurate payroll records.
- Work with Payroll staff at Seattle Municipal Tower running error reports, justifying hours, managing leave balances, researching pay discrepancies and working to alleviate payroll processing issues.
- Prepare correspondence, reports and work materials as needed.
- Ensure written procedures are established for each subordinate and provide instructions to staff regarding guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Serves as lead worker over subordinate staff to coordinate assignments, resolve problems, monitor work, provide instruction on tasks and ensure proper work methods.
- Keep informed of changing needs and participate in Division decision-making in process improvement and staff development;

Requires three years of previous accounting and/or bookkeeping experience or one year work experience as an Accounting Technician II (or a combination of education/experience/training which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
- Experience working with Unions and the ability to navigate complex Collective Bargaining Agreements and apply rules and polices in the administration of payroll.
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships and to provide timely and responsive customer service.
- Good problem solving skills and ability to bring parties together to constructively resolve issues.
- Demonstrated ability to work with staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite to include advanced experience using Excel.
- Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in business, finance or a related field (or a combination of education, training or experience that provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
- Experience presenting information clearly and concisely via spreadsheets and written reports.
- Experience using and processing payroll in Workday or similar HRIS system.

The full salary range for this position is $30.72 to $34.47 per hour.
