Brief Description


Job Objective:


Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist and the pharmacy technician supervisor performs routine and some intermediate level tasks to assist the Pharmacists.


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Understands and can implement medication recall process.
  • Refrains from using or appearing to use confidential information acquired in the course of work for unethical or illegal advantage either personally or through third parties.
  • Refuses any gift, favor or hospitality that would influence or would appear to influence actions.
  • Assures adequate inventory is maintained at all times.
  • Disclose fully all relevant information that could reasonably be expected to influence an intended users understanding of the reports, comments, and recommendations presented.
  • Participates in age specific educational and training programs.
  • Maintains an appropriate level of competence by ongoing development of knowledge and skills.
  • Assists Pharmacist
  • Refrains from disclosing confidential information acquired in the course of work except when authorized, unless legally obligated to do so.
  • Assists Pharmacist in preparing labels.
  • Maintains professional work habits by organizing workload, setting priorities, completing assignments in a timely manner, utilizing resources appropriately, complying with department program standards and adapts well to change.
  • Assists in the creation and publication of training reference materials.
  • Performs basic pharmacy procedures for the routine operation of an acute care pharmacy. Such as checking in merchandise, filling physicians orders for pharmacy verification, floor stock, preparing IV's, chemotherapy and TPN's.
  • Refrains from engaging in any activity that would prejudice ability to carry out duties ethically.
  • Assists Pharmacist in proper labeling of medications, processes medications orders and those returned to Pharmacy.

  • Coordinate with other team members and assists manager with implementation of new applications.
  • Avoids actual or apparent conflicts of interest and advises all appropriate parties of any potential conflict.
  • Assists in the operation of all Information and Automated Dispensing Systems: Pyxis Med Stations, Pyxis Connect, electronic EHR and other technology.
  • Conduct system demonstrations for visiting groups.
  • Assists Pharmacist in preparing required paperwork for controlled substances.
  • Clarifies physician orders by obtaining additional information for processing Orders, investigates when necessary, and answers questions regarding pharmacy procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups.
  • Assures and credit and billing tasks are completed in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in required age specific competencies.
  • Records patient medication histories when assigned and after demonstration of competence, will include direct patient interaction.
  • Maintains Competence
  • Regularly demonstrates commitment to a set of ethics and values by behaving in an ethical manner that is consistent with stated values. Supports and enforces hospital Corporate Compliance Program.
  • Recognizes departures from the normal and discusses with pharmacist.

  • Fully understands and can apply all state and federal laws and regulations related to the practice of pharmacy. Pharmacy Law, MERP, Joint Commission.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency regarding special needs and behaviors of age or ethnic specific groups.

  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrate the ability to collaborate with other health care professionals.

  • Able to effectively train and educate staff.

Education and Experience:


Education


  • CPhT preferred.
  • Associate of Arts or Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • High School diploma.


Experience


  • Minimum 2 years acute care experience at a Pharmacy Tech II OR a minimum of 4 years’ experience in a pharmacy required.


Required Licensure and/or Certifications:


  • Current State of California Pharmacy Technician License.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:


  • Requires ability to stand, sit or walk around department and facility most of the day.
  • Some bending, lifting less than 20 lbs and occasional reaching above the shoulder.
  • Potential for exposure to dangerous or toxic medications.
  • May need PPE if preparing chemotherapy.
  • Typing, answering phones and working around automated equipment.
  • Works primarily in an office environment.
