What you'll do


The Senior Counsel, Employment and Litigation will support our Human Resources and business partners on employment law matters in DocuSign’s North America offices and other global locations as assigned, providing pragmatic, risk-weighted advice on a broad range of employment, benefits and related compliance matters. This role will also support non-employment litigation and oversee third-party claims affecting DocuSign’s global business.

This role involves leading and handling cutting-edge and complex legal projects and matters. You should thrive in an environment that requires you to adapt to changing priorities and organizational needs. In addition, you must have the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, rapidly growing environment and be comfortable working collaboratively and proactively within the Legal team as well as across other functional teams and with external stakeholders.

This position is an individual contributor role reporting to the Director of Global Employment and Litigation.


Responsibility

  • Assist in designing and leading training events on employment law and benefits matters
  • Draft employee-facing policies, handbooks, and other resources
  • Draft and negotiate offer letters and employment-related agreements, including severance, separation, restrictive covenant, retention, and other employment-related agreements
  • Advise both on day-to-day issues as well as strategic and systemic initiatives
  • Support employment-related aspects of mergers, acquisitions, strategic investments, and divestitures, including due diligence and related integration efforts
  • Participate in Legal department and team related projects, as assigned
  • Manage outside counsel handling both employment and non-employment litigation, including management of budgets, directing litigation strategy, and reviewing pleadings and other documents
  • Draft and/or review pre-litigation and litigation documents including correspondence with opposing counsel, pleadings, and mediation/arbitration statements
  • Monitor new laws, regulations and decisions affecting the substantive legal areas above and provide strategic advice to the Legal team
  • Respond to attorney demand letters and agency matters, including government-initiated inquiries and audits
  • Advise and support DocuSign Human Resources and business partners on employment-law related matters in DocuSign’s North America offices, and other global locations as assigned, including hiring, performance management, terminations, discrimination, harassment, accommodations, leaves of absence, wage and hour issues, incentive compensation, benefits (including plan design, implementation, administration and communications), employee investigations, restructuring initiatives and corporate development (M&A) activity
  • Manage pre-filing demands including investigating claims, communicating with opposing counsel and negotiating resolution

Employee is not required to be in or near an office frequently

and works from a designated remote work location for the majority of the

What you bring


Basic

  • JD from an accredited institution
  • 8+ years employment law and litigation practice in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal department
  • Admitted to practice in the US and in good standing


Preferred

  • Ability to maintain productive work relationships and work collaboratively with legal area specialists to resolve issues
  • Benefits experience, including advising senior leaders and benefits professionals on a range of ERISA, fiduciary compliance, plan governance, and legal compliance matters and related plan documentation
  • Track record of working efficiently with a client-service focus in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Employment law and litigation experience at a major law firm
  • Experience supporting international business operations and partnering with HR and other professionals across multiple regions
  • Prior in-housework experience
  • Executive compensation experience in-house and/or at a major law firm


Wage Transparency


Based on applicable legislation, the below details pay ranges in the following locations:

California: $146,800 - $235,025 base salary

Illinois and Colorado: $139,800 - $197,400 base salary

Washington and New York (including NYC metro area): $139,800 - $207,325 base salary

This role is also eligible for bonus, equity and

benefits.
