Job Description


Come join our dynamic Human Resource Team at Iowa's Department of Administrative Services - Human Resource Enterprise (DAS-HRE). We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and driven individual to be an integral part our Classification Team as a Classification Analyst!


The State of Iowa’s job classification system is a vital component of our human resources structure. It involves categorizing and organizing job positions based on their duties, responsibilities, and qualifications. This system helps standardize job roles, ensures fairness in compensation, facilitates recruitment and career progression, and promotes organizational efficiency. As a Classification Analyst, you will be at the forefront of this system, playing a key role in accurately assessing and assigning appropriate job classifications, which is essential for the smooth functioning of all State agencies across the Executive Branch.


As a Classification Analyst (Human Resource Professional I), you will:


  • Collaborate with agency personnel regarding job design and the impact of organizational change on classification(s).
  • Executes modifications to the classification system, including changes to job class descriptions, series guidelines, selective certifications, etc.; identifies inconsistencies in application of classification tools and/or other reasons that warrant changes to the classification system and works collaboratively with all parties to draft necessary changes.
  • Review and analyze Position Description Questionnaires (PDQs) and related documents to determine proper position classification.
  • Respond to inquiries from DAS-HRE staff, employees, and applicants regarding education and experience requirements.
  • Provide consultation on selective certifications, essential functions, and competencies.
  • Implements/execute classification decisions and documents decisions.

Minimum Qualification Requirements


Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:


  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes three years of full-time work performing technical human resources work.
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree.
  • A combination of a total of four years of education and full-time experience in technical or professional human resources work, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work equals one year of full-time experience.
