The University of New Mexico is seeking a dynamic and experienced HR professional to join our team as an Assistant Vice President for Human Resources. Reporting to the Vice President for Human Resources and CHRO, the AVP for HR will oversee the strategic direction of multiple core functions within the Division of Human Resources.
The AVP provides strategic and operational leadership in human resources planning, policy, and systems development of assigned organizational functions. Ensures that HR programs and initiatives are integrated and effective in supporting the overall mission, goals and objectives of the HR Division and the institution. Represents the HR Division to senior administration, external organizations, government agencies and other key internal and external constituents, as assigned. Represents and/or acts on behalf of the Vice President for Human Resources, as needed and when appropriate.
Key responsibilities of the position include:
- Providing integrative leadership and direction in the management of multiple core functions including some day-to-day oversight or indirect oversight of university services and various large-scale initiatives of assigned areas.
- Directing and coordinating the activities of assigned HR units, management, professional and support staff; establishes standards, evaluates performance, and monitors workload and productivity.
- Providing strategic direction on opportunities to streamline and/or automate processes, procedures, organizational systems, HR services, customer experience, and data management.
- Providing strategic leadership in the development of short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures as it relates to functional oversight.

- Demonstrate exceptional oral and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a wide variety of constituents.
- Demonstrate a high level of expertise in HR best practices and compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service.
- Possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills, flexibility, and adaptability.
- Have extensive experience in a broad array of human resources functions.

- Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
- Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
- Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
Bachelor's degree; at least 10 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
The preferred qualifications for this position include:
- Experience in data analysis and a track record of data-driven decision making.
- Experience in strategic planning, project management, and process improvement.
- Experience working with HRIS, applicant tracking, and talent management systems.
- Master’s or other advanced degree
- Experience working in leadership roles in human resources within a higher education institution or similar public entity.
