Food is an integral part of our individual health and community well-being; as well as nutrition security for ourselves and neighbors. Agriculture is embedded in our food and growing practices, that impact our health. This study will seek to understand food as medicine, within the lens of food production through two methods. First, it will assess the current systems in place that work to connect healthy and culturally relevant foods to individuals through prescriptions in clinical and hospital settings. To understand this, a network will be developed for sharing across the broader North American region. This network will share and identify existing best practices, including but not limited to: insurance practices, health care professionals adopting food prescription programs, and ability to source from local and regional food producers. The network will convene at least once in person in the second year (potentially in connection with existing summits already being held in the public health arena). The in-person convening will focus on deeper discussion and understanding of the cross-cutting issues and seek collaborative responses and partnership for identification of future needs, particularly as it relates to farmers. The project outputs will include pilots and case studies of prescription programs in clinical settings, specifically for locally grown produce and other food products. The second area of work will include further exploration and deep learning from indigenous people and their knowledge of food as medicine as it relates to systemic practices and knowing across community and food. This will include dynamic conversations and learning through a cohort based model with existing food system educators, in an effort to fully address iterations to frameworks of our food system. This work will connect to existing food system curricula providers and encourage expansive lenses on how we view our food system.
