Medical Assistant Ii - Family Medicine Clinic (50%-100%)

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking a 50%- 100% Medical Assistant II to work for the Family Medicine Clinic.

Position Summary

• Under direct supervision of LIP (licensed independent practitioner), RN (registered nurse), NM/ANM (nurse manager/assistant nurse manager) or other licensed designee, functions as a member of the ambulatory patient care team. Performs technical, patient care and related clerical functions in an ambulatory setting by coordinating all elements of the patient visit.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

• Attends and participates in staff meetings.
• Performs routine tests and procedures, including POC tests, under the direction of the LIP or per protocol.
• Responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic, interacting with patients, families, nursing staff and LIP’s to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
• Completes on-line and in-service education programs annually and as required/offered.
• Assists in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments according to patient condition and age, including but not limited to: patient history and screenings, vital signs, medication history, allergies and immunizations.
• Treats matters with confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
• Demonstrates consideration and respect for patients, families, and co-workers at all times.
• Administers routine oral, rectal or injectable medications and vaccinations within the scope of practice and per established protocols. Medication can only be administered by certified medical assistants or medical assistants who have completed a formal accredited training program.
• Reports unusual incidents, complaints or concerns to LIP

Schedule: 50% - 100% (20 hours a week - 40 hours a week)

Hours: 5 8-hour or 4 10-hour shifts available between 7:30a-6p, Monday - Friday. No weekends or holidays

Location: UIHC Main Campus (JPP)

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

• Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant or completion of a recognized one year Medical Assistant Program, or Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to: pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.

Special Qualification

• Completion of a Medical Assistant program accredited by ABHES or CAAHEP, graduation from a college with institutional accreditation by regional or national accrediting agency approved by the U.S. Department of Education, or LPN licensure is required.

Desirable Qualifications

• UIHC Medical Assistant experience is preferred.
• Certified Medical Assistant is preferred.
