Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
The Grant Writer supports the Executive Director, Artistic Director, and Program Managers with grants for the NHCC, including identifying grant sources and coordinating the development, writing, submission, management, and reporting of grants for the NHCC. The Grant Writer is responsible for increasing current and future grant funding from numerous sources through effective prospect research and the development of accurate and persuasive proposals.
How does it get done?
- -Provide a full spectrum of assistance to NHCC staff in the planning, writing, budget development, and evaluation of grants. Work proactively with NHCC staff to develop long range grant initiatives,
- -Clearly communicate the history, structure, objectives, programs, and financial needs of the organization in grant proposals and reports.
- -Develop a plan for the submission of grants that is based on the NHCC's strategic priorities and goals.
- -Research grant opportunities from government and non-government agencies and other funding sources, prepare letters of intent and full grant proposals and budgets to secure new funding and
- -Coordinate, compile, and evaluate data and background information related to programs and exhibitions to ensure grant proposals and reports are comprehensive and compelling.
- -Review private, state and federal grant guidelines to determine relevance to NHCC's priorities and disseminate grant opportunities to appropriate NHCC staff.
Who are the customers?
This position serves the Executive Director, Artistic Director, Program Managers of the NHCC, and the NHCC Finance department.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has a talent for translating complex topics into clear, concise, and compelling content; proven track record of identifying, submitting, and receiving successful grant awards that align with organizational funding priorities; experience in building and stewarding relationships with key leaders within funding organizations; and strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks with attention to detail. Preference for someone with knowledge of the arts and Hispanic culture and previous experience with Grant Writing, Persuasive Communications, and a variety of business writing styles within a government agency, nonprofit organization, or foundation.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and two (2) years of experience in the procedures of business and management principles involved in strategic planning. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting.
