Job Title: Vice President, Senior Analyst - European Banks


Department: Investments


Reports To: SVP, Senior Portfolio Manager, Preferred Securities


FLSA Code: Exempt


Estimated Salary: $200,000 - $225,000


Job Summary:


The primary role of the Senior Analyst will be to conduct in-depth industry and company research and provide credit analysis in support of investment recommendations to portfolio managers. The portfolio managers and other analysts on the preferred securities team are currently based in New York. The research and recommendations will influence the firm’s investments in its global preferred securities funds. Credit research experience covering European banks is mandatory. Major Responsibilities/Activities:


  • Develop and maintain relationships with management of companies under coverage.
  • Contribute overall to the success of the preferred securities team in its goal of providing excellent results for clients.
  • Assist portfolio managers on new issue analysis and valuation for the sector.
  • Conduct continuing evaluation of industry fundamentals and trends to assess impact on the sector and companies under coverage.
  • Formulate investment recommendations across the capital stack and across currencies (primarily USD, EUR, and GBP), including senior debt, subordinated debt, and preferred/capital securities, with the greatest emphasis on CoCos/AT1s issued by European banks.
  • Work with portfolio managers and other analysts on the team to develop additional quantitative and analytical tools to enhance security selection and portfolio management of European banks.
  • Present investment recommendations on European banks, including sector, country, and company positioning, to portfolio managers.
  • Analyze company and industry news quickly and concisely and convey information to portfolio managers.
  • Travel to industry conferences on occasion.
  • Stay abreast of global credit market trends that could affect valuations.
  • Provide verbal and written credit analysis on companies under coverage to portfolio managers on an ongoing basis.
  • Monitor country fundamentals and central bank policy as part of sector analysis.
  • Interact regularly with portfolio managers and other analysts on the team to create and maintain appropriate valuation models for European banks.
  • Support the firm’s institutional marketing and mutual fund marketing activities as necessary.


Minimum Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college
  • Passionate about a career in asset management.
  • Applicable undergraduate or post-graduate degree.
  • Team-oriented and collaborative.
  • Exceptional qualitative and quantitative research skills.
  • Consideration will be given to candidates based in New York or London.
  • Proven capabilities in market and company analysis that are reflected in the quality of written and verbal communication.
  • Prior experience with multi-currency fixed income investments a plus.
  • Enthusiastic and hardworking with the capacity and desire to multi-task in a dynamic work environment where individuals are consistently challenged to deliver superior results.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in credit research, with a buy-side or sell-side institution, covering European banks (Continental Europe and UK).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Aptitude to make investment recommendations with vision and conviction.
  • Strong knowledge of the various types of securities within the capital stack.
  • Prior experience with European bank CoCos/AT1s a significant plus.
  • CFA certification a plus.
  • Intelligent and creative thinker with the ability to promptly assess a situation and generate insightful and innovative ideas.


Working Hours:


  • Work hours are 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
  • NY – based position – Working hours may begin as early as 6:00 AM EDT to evaluate offshore and non-USD issues originating in London.
  • London – based position – Working hours may extend later than 5:00 PM EDT from time to time to allow for greater interaction with New York-based portfolio managers and analysts.
  • Flexibility around working hours is required as this position covers European investments for a team based in New York.
  • This position must be flexible with the understanding that work deadlines must be met and at times it is necessary to work off hours to complete the required project at hand.
