Operations Manager- Farm Food Distribution Hub

The Common Market is a nonprofit local food distributor that connects food from family farms to wholesale markets. Our mission is to strengthen regional farms while making local food accessible to our communities and the institutions that serve them. The Common Market has recently expanded its operations to provide boxes of local farm food to households affected by food insecurity. Founded in 2008, The Common Market currently serves Houston, Austin and has locations in Philadelphia and Atlanta.
This position will take a leadership role, overseeing the success of all distribution operations. You will directly manage a team of 4 FT and 10 PT staff. This role will work across our warehouse and trucking operations to ensure safe, quality local foods from The Common Market network of local farmers and ranchers reaches schools, hospitals, and community organizations who count on us to access healthy foods. You will be joining a small, dedicated team and work side-by-side senior management in a way that encourages teamwork, cooperation, and productivity.
This role is fully on-site and located at our warehouse in Houston, Texas.
Operations Manager Duties And Responsibilities
Team Management: Coaching, motivation, and supporting team to perform to the best of their abilities; providing coaching and recognition where appropriate, including training and development of new team members. Staff scheduling and supervision, prepare work schedules and day-to-day supervision of team members.
Solving Problems: Conceive, propose, and initiate solutions to improve service, customer engagement, storage and operational flows. Foster day-to-day operational excellence. Manage key performance indicators and identify innovative action plans to address gaps.
Technology: Responsible for utilizing and implementing The Common Market technology, this includes:

• Business tools (Salesforce, FoodConnex, ADP, Elite Extra, Samsara and data analysis)
• Microsoft Office (primarily Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
• Tablets, scan guns, label printers for drivers and warehouse associates

Job Duties
Oversight of Trucking & Warehouse Operations. Develop daily truck routes and dispatch to trucking team. Coordinate pickups and deliveries to warehouse with suppliers and vendors along with warehouse packing schedule.
Farmer Relations. Lead Common Market's relationship with farmers, set up crop plan, create purchase orders in FoodConnex in accordance with plan. Ensure prompt farmer payments in support of our commitment to improve farm viability. Hold farmers accountable to Common Market quality standards.
Procurement Strategy. Develop procurement strategy for wholesale and box programs to optimize profitability and advancement of the mission. Forecast demand and supply to ensure adequate availability of high quality food for Common Market's customers.
Inventory. Oversee inventory processes from receiving to ultimate delivery to customers. Conduct physical inventory. Implement measures to ensure accuracy in the inventory management system. Reconcile PO/ Salesforce Receiving Log and Farm Invoices and post Purchase Orders. Minimize shrink and spoilage.
Food Safety. Operate facility in a manner consistent with our Food Safety Plan. Prepare for annual audit. Leadership role in Recall, Crisis Management and Food Defense/ Food Fraud teams.
Facilities. Coordinates, oversees and/or manages repair and maintenance work assignments performed by technicians, vendors and contractors performing truck & building maintenance, landscaping and janitorial work. Reviews work orders to ensure that assignments are completed. Responsible for facilities inspections and reports.
Requirements

• Ability to work in a disciplined manner and capable of following established procedures, practices and comply with local, state and federal regulations.
• Demonstrated experience fostering positive working relationships with people of diverse cultures.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Spreadsheet and Word Processing software, and ability to learn Common Market technology and programs. Must have excellent computer skills.
• Experience managing and supervising teams of 5+ staff
• Able to regularly lift 50 lbs
• Ability to manage the pressures and stress associated with a deadline-oriented atmosphere and customer service issues. Demonstrates skill in making independent decision in support of company policies and procedures in a timely manner.
