Human Resources/Payroll Specialist

H/L is looking for a Human Resources/Payroll Specialist with well-rounded experience administering benefits, processing payroll, and managing HRIS. The Human Resources/Payroll Specialist will be a part of a highly collaborative and fast-moving HR team servicing employees located in over 20 states nationwide.

This position is open to hybrid or remote work.

About You:

• You have the ability to manage your work effectively in times when priorities must shift.
• You have knowledge of employee benefit plans, leaves of absence, and COBRA.
• You have 2–4 years of HR administration and payroll processing experience.
• You have hands-on experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
• You have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• You have excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
• You have experience reconciling benefits with payroll and insurance invoices.
• You have proven abilities to work independently and proactively collaborate with teams.
• You have experience working in an HRIS platform, managing multiple HR functions, processing payroll, and creating ad hoc reports. UKG/UltiPro experience a plus!
• You have a bachelor’s degree.
• You have comprehensive knowledge of multi-state payroll best practices and employment laws, especially for California.
• You maintain a high standard for accuracy and discretion.
• You have exceptional customer service skills and have demonstrated the ability to work effectively in a hybrid or remote work environment.

What You’ll Do:

• Assist the HR team with handling HR projects and initiatives.
• Assist with HR communications, which include maintaining community pages, newsletters, and presentations.
• Manage all on-boarding and off-boarding activities.
• Assist Director of HR with the administration of bi-annual performance evaluation processes.
• Calculate off-cycle payments.
• Administer timely health benefit enrollments, life event updates, and terminations within all applicable carrier portals.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Assist with the recruiting and new-hire processes, which include creating job postings, scheduling interviews, creating new-hire documents, conducting pre-interviews, and checking references.
• Assist with administering all leave-of-absence requests and processes.
• Assist HR Manager to administer and coordinate employee recognition, engagement, wellness, and learning and development programs.
• Respond to employment verifications and UI claims.
• Learn and maintain all HRIS functions, which include, but are not limited to, maintaining employee records, payroll processing, benefits administration, and creating HR and payroll reports.
• Track, maintain, and audit employees’ paid time off accrual plans.
• Prepare and process full-cycle, semi-monthly payroll, including wages, deductions, garnishments, etc.
• Maintain personnel records and confidential personnel matters with the utmost discretion.
