Job Description
Overview:
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

PPPL’s Human Resources team is seeking two hard-working driven Summer Interns. As a Human Resources Intern, you will have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge and give to PPPL’s scientific mission. Under supervision of the Talent and Workforce Engagement Partner, you will be assisting with facilitation of HR programs and initiatives related to attracting, developing and retaining a versatile and diverse workforce.

The position will involve projects of varying levels of complexity based on experience and interest including data and market analysis, policy writing, recruiting and on-boarding, projects driven by strategic objectives, and various other ad hoc administrative duties.

This position has been funded in memory of Pauline Jessica Atieno Dande, a Rutgers student, former Rutgers employee, and a beloved member of the PPPL-HR team at the time of her passing. Pauline was passionate about pursuing a career in human resources and was a life-long learner. It is our hope that this Internship not only honors her memory but encourages the future workforce of HR Professionals.

Eligibility
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive information with absolute confidentiality and integrity.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite applications.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, balance multiple tasks while using the capability and capacity to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication skills.
  • Undergraduate cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale)/3.5 (5.0 scale) or greater.
  • Junior and Senior undergraduate and master’s degree students studying toward a degree in human resources management or related field.
The selected interns will require on-site presence; however, flexibility will be allowed for hybrid arrangements.
Responsibilities:
The goal of this internship is to apply knowledge acquired in the classroom to real-world situations, as well as gain the skills and experience that is necessary to prepare the student for a successful career in Human Resources. The Human Resources intern will work in Human Resources and with the Science Education team.

Core Duties:
  • This internship requires strong communication skills; the ability to multi-task and the ability to prioritize assignments in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to work well under pressure while driving results.
  • Reporting to the Talent and Workforce Engagement Partner, the Human Resources Intern will assist with the coordination of various tasks and processes within the Office of Human Resources.
Specific day-to-day responsibilities may include, but not limited to:
  • Participate in other projects as requested.
  • Identify evidence-based, model practices from other institutions for staff mentorship, professional development, and engagement.
  • Assist with education initiatives for the expansion for equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Provide basic administrative support.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
  • We are seeking a Rutgers student, Junior and Senior undergraduate and master’s degree students studying toward a degree in human resources management or related field.
  • A strategic goal of PPPL is diversifying the community, ensuring equitable access, and making the STEM fields more accessible and inclusive. With this in mind, we will take into consideration equivalent work and personal experiences as well as efforts in education, outreach or other related service activities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong writing and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal/moderate supervision.
  • Strong skills in the Google suite of applications: Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Slides.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize assignments from multiple client groups while providing exceptional customer service.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and a professional demeanor is a requirement for this position.
  • Demonstration of creative problem solving and ability to take initiative to investigate issues and make recommendations.
  • Comfortable working in constantly changing environment while meeting deadlines.
