Job Description
Summary
The Grassroots Hockey Manager will manage and contribute to the organization’s objective to grow and promote the sport of hockey in central Ohio at all levels and to cultivate fan avidity. Primary focus will include developing strategies in removing barriers of entry for both ice and street hockey development and creating fan experiences to promote the Blue Jackets while increasing participation in the sport. This position will manage and execute Industry Growth Fund grassroot programs and will support the local hockey community and USA Hockey partnerships. Through strategic programs and enthusiasm about growing the game, this position will generate brand awareness and bring fresh, focused audiences to the Blue Jackets to support an increase in hockey participation.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Assist Director in the creation and execution of Industry Growth Fund programs, such as try hockey for free and school-wide hockey wellness curriculum, to meet specified metrics.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Digital Media Departments on content for all digital assets specific to growing the game, such as website, social platforms, in-game and broadcast.
  • Create and manage strategic programming tied Hockey is For Everyone Month and USA Hockey Weekend Across America to bring awareness to the game and grow grassroots participation in the sport.
  • Develop strategy and oversee all aspects of Learn to Play program to include scheduling, marketing, registration, equipment distribution, staffing, on-ice instruction, and evaluation with an emphasis to transition participants into beginner skating or hockey programs.
  • Work with Corporate Partnership and Group Ticketing departments to maximize revenue generating opportunities through sticks in hands programming.
  • Evaluate current ice and street hockey efforts, assess partnerships and make recommendations to maximize opportunities to get sticks into kid’s hands and develop a simple pathway for continued development.
  • Track hockey participation and help transition kids from beginner programs to ‘next step’ programs by collaborating with partners such as community partners, the Chiller rinks, and Blue Jackets Hockey League. Manage its yearly growth and development.
  • Management of the Fan Development budget.
  • Collaborate with leadership of the Blue Jackets Hockey League to maintain and enhance existing initiatives for continued player development.
  • Support Blue Jackets Foundation initiatives, as needed.
  • Cultivate relevant and mutually beneficial partnerships with regional hockey associations and USA Hockey for the growth and advancement of hockey.
  • Support and implement high school hockey partnerships, such as High School Hockey Night, Blue Jackets Cup and Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) State Tournament.
  • Oversee Fan Development internship program.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and Blue Jacket home games, as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises employees in the Fan Development Department. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; and 3-5 years of experience and/or training in organized sports and youth-serving organization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of hockey and/or prior experience playing hockey preferred, but not required.
Skating experience (hockey skates) is required.
USA Hockey Level 1 Coaching Certification preferred, but not required.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in Microsoft Office Software.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to get on ice skates to instruct kids using the USA Hockey ADM principles.
The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
