Job Description

Due to unprecedented growth in contests in recent years, the Florida Scholastic Press Association is dividing its current Evaluations Coordinator position into two separate roles, one overseeing evaluations and the other contests. Current coordinator Joe Humphrey will transition to Contest Coordinator, with oversight of fall, spring and convention digital contests. FSPA is seeking an experienced journalism educator to oversee its media evaluations program.


Position Description

Evaluations CoordinatorPosition Summary:

The evaluations coordinator administers five high school media evaluations (online media, newspaper/newsmagazine, yearbook, literary magazine and broadcast news program) annually. This includes publicizing the evaluations, recruiting evaluators, handling and submitting physical and digital submissions to evaluators, distributing comments and certificates, and ensuring evaluators get paid in a timely fashion. The evaluations coordinator will work to maintain and grow the number of participants each year. Florida scholastic media programs are among the best in the nation, and the Evaluations Coordinator will work to keep that tradition. The role shall be an independent contractor and not an employee of FSPA.


Responsibilities include:
  • Broadcast News Program and Newspaper/Newsmagazines - rolling deadlines October through February
  • Online Media - February
  • Prepare all materials for presentation, including PowerPoint, certificates and plaques.
  • Ensure quality control and transparency in the process, publicize evaluations programs and deadlines via social media, email and the FSPA website, and answer questions via email, phone and social media..
  • Yearbook, Literary magazine - June
  • Regularly review and update evaluation scorebooks and rubrics to reflect best scholastic journalism practices.
  • Recruit and maintain a bank of high-quality evaluators from around the country reflecting FSPA’s desire to provide cutting-edge evaluations and instruction. Evaluators for FSPA must balance rigor with instructional comments that allow members to learn and grow. The coordinator must place the appropriate submitted media to an appropriate evaluator.
  • Coordinate with the FSPA Board of Directors to give recognition to All-Florida and Sunshine Standout award winners in all categories at Convention.
  • Speak at state convention and district workshops (when practicable) to pitch the service, speak to best practices and help new advisers access the service.
  • Administer five publication evaluations throughout the school year
  • Keep FSPA on the cutting edge of providing feedback to its members, including, as needed, the introduction of additional evaluation services.


Additional Information:

Advertised Salary: $6,000 annually (paid monthly)

Anticipated Starting Date: October 1st, 2023. Evaluations Coordinator will have two months of transition training with current coordinator, Joe Humphrey.

Minimum Requirements: A successful candidate will have a degree in journalism, mass communications, education or related field; experience in education and/or advising media programs at the collegiate or high school level; management experience; and the ability to work with a wide range of voices and geographic/demographic concerns. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills are necessary to the position. A contractor cannot be a member of the FSPA board of directors simultaneously.
