Director Of Program Operations

BES is a national nonprofit organization that identifies and prepares excellent leaders to transform education in their communities. Over more than two decades, BES has prepared leaders to found 200+ schools in 50 cities across 20 states and Washington DC, educating 63,000+ students – of whom 82 percent qualify for free/reduced lunch, and 94 percent identify as students of color. In all, BES has trained more than 2,700 leaders to found, lead, and grow schools through its leadership development offerings.

BES has finalized its strategic plan for 2023-2028, and this new position will play a key role in its implementation. Over the next five years, BES will significantly grow leadership development programming to support the sector with building and sustaining a pipeline of strong leaders across public schools in the country. The BES Director of Operations will be responsible for the operational functions of all BES programs and training, including leading strategic shifts and growth of programs. This position will report to the Chief Operating Officer and manage at least one operations team member.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership

• Serve on the Talent & Operations Department Leadership Team, along with other senior leaders of the T&O Department.
• Oversee and manage budgets and vendor/consultant relationships with a focus on maintaining a net-neutral or net-positive budget.
• Design and lead regular meetings of all operations staff to ensure cross-organizational coordination and alignment
• Manage one member of the Program Operations team.

Strategy

• Plans and supports operations and program team or process stepbacks on a regular basis and identifies improvements, including regarding MOCHAs.
• Designs, administers, and analyzes all weekly/monthly program surveys and presents findings to program leads.
• Develops vision, strategy, and long-term plans for team; oversees execution for operations team
• Provides program-related data to the development team for reporting on funder and grant requirements.
• Creates a process for and monitors progress toward team and company goals and allocates resources appropriately toward meeting BES, department, team, and individual priorities

Process and Operations Management

• Manages relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including establishing cross-functional teams or communications loops.
• Develop and implement project plans, an annual calendar, and monthly checklists reflecting all cyclical and upcoming program operations tasks, including program participant onboarding.
• Oversee successful coordinating of travel, events (virtual and in-person), residencies, and other key aspects of all programs.
• Own enrollment and onboarding processes for program participants by designing and managing execution plans with input from the Chief of New Schools and Chief of Leadership Development, including creating registration sites, sending welcome packets, and project management.
• Assist members of the Talent & Operations Department during surge periods by providing up to 10% capacity on internal operational projects, as needed.
• Own and manage contract management for all vendors supporting operations in-person or virtual events for programs (e.g., hotels, transportation, etc.)

Required Skills, Experiences, and Competencies:

• Demonstrated success in strategic planning and managing large projects that involve multi-tasking and multiple stakeholders
• 1-2 years of experience managing vendors
• Strong technical skills, including with CRMs, Google Suite, and online conference platforms
• 2 years of people management experience
• History of taking action to improve the diversity, equity, and inclusion in a school or organization
• 5 years of related work experience and 2-3 years experience managing operations, processes and events for groups.

Travel:

This role can be based anywhere in the nation; up to 30-40% travel expected; occasional evening and weekend work required.

The 2023-24 salary range for this Director position grade at BES is:

• Maximum: $137,137
