Our Wind Technicians are a vital part of our organization, and we take pride in hiring and training the best in the industry.
We are looking for a Wind Technician to maintain all aspects of our turbines (e.g., electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, etc.).
The physical work location is Duke Energy’s
Los Vientos III, IV & V
and
Mesteno Wind Farm
in Starr County, TX (Rio Grande City).
Duke Energy’s Los Vientos 5-phase project is the largest wind farm in the company and contains some of the tallest wind turbines in the U.S. The individual selected for this role will be expected to climb turbines 400 feet tall daily to complete role responsibilities.
Duke Energy will offer relocation assistance if you are selected for the role and do not live within a reasonable commute of the work location.
This is a full-time, permanent position with significant room for advancement. This is both the entry level and initial training level for the series. The hiring manager may elect to fill this position at the higher Wind Technician - Level II dependent upon a candidate's skills and experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform routine maintenance on wind turbines
  • Perform turbine pad mounted transformer switching
  • Perform energy isolation in accordance with all Lock Out / Tag Out Procedures
  • Participate in on call rotation to maintain 24/7 support of facility, including weekends and holidays as required by manager.
  • Maintain service records and document for all work and parts usage using iPad and computer.
  • Work as scheduled during the week as required by manager
  • Maintain EH&S Documentation and complete necessary paperwork
  • Perform small or large corrective tasks on wind turbines
  • Climb over 500 ft. several times daily
  • Diagnose and resolve faults on turbines as they relate to mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems
  • Always maintain a high level of safety awareness climbing and performing responsibilities on tall turbines
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Wind Technician - Level I:
  • In addition to the High School/GED requirement, the ability to complete level I job performance measures and training in Duke Renewable Academy within 1 year
  • High School/GED
Wind Technician - Level II:
  • Internal Candidates - In addition to the education requirement, (1) plus year of technical experience with Duke Energy as a Wind Technician. Must also have Turbine Technician-1 and Electrical Operator1 JPM Completed.
  • External Candidates - In addition to the education requirement, (3) plus years of related work experience. Must pass required Turbine Technician I and Electrical Operator I JPMs within the probationary period.
  • High School/GED
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience climbing and working on tall tower turbines
  • AAS degree or certification in Wind/Renewable Energy or applicable field of study.
  • Experience with Vestas 2.0-MW tall tower turbines
  • High voltage and substation maintenance experience
  • Experience with tall tower technology and V110-2.0 MW platform
  • Forklift certified
  • More than 1 year experience with wind turbines: troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance.
  • Microsoft Office Including Excel/Word/PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment for facility maintenance and working knowledge of crane and rigging requirements
  • TSL tower climber and rescue & EEM training
  • CPR and AED Training Certification
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electronic testing equipment (i.e., voltage testers, amp clamps, oscilloscopes, and various hand and power tools)
  • Competent with Maximo EZ Max mobile work and My Time management systems
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Working in all-weather outdoor conditions (extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, snow)
  • Operate equipment including but not limited to forklifts and commercial motor vehicles
  • Must be able to pass a background check, drug test, & preemployment physical to be hired
  • Walking, Climbing of stairs, ladders, and/or scaffolds
  • Any travel to projects
  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • Ability to lift 75lbs individually
  • Completion of OEM or third-party technical specialty training program.
  • The ability to climb turbine towers (up to 400ft) daily
  • Field Mobility Classification – Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
  • Exposure to mechanical, electrical, and/or other hazards
  • Exposure to noisy, dusty conditions, chemicals, or solvents
  • Work at heights greater than 300 feet daily
  • Safe Working Weight Requirement - This position contains a weight restriction of 265 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.
