Seattle Parks and Recreation Facilities Division is seeking full-time Plumbers to welcome into our dynamic team! SPR Plumbers perform journey-level plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair work on plumbing, heating, irrigation, gas and other related systems and components. Our Facilities Division provides support for many facilities across the city, including 26 community centers, 8 indoor swimming pools, 2 outdoor (summer) swimming pools, 4 environmental education centers, 2 small craft centers, shelter houses, rental facilities and much more.

The work requires knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of the plumbing trade, and making decisions in selecting appropriate materials and methods of work. Most tasks are covered by standard guidelines, although judgment is needed to make appropriate selections of guidelines. Positions in this class are given general instructions on assignments and frequently work in different locations from their supervisors. The work includes personal contacts with vendors for purchasing materials and parts and with departmental staff for exchanging information. This position is represented by the Plumbers and Pipefitters, Local 32.

The Facilities Division places a very strong emphasis on providing excellent customer service to the public, clients and staff as well as helping to ensure public safety and enjoyment while they are at SPR facilities and parks.

We are currently recruiting for three (3) regular, benefited positions on the Day Shift between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on a 4-day, 10-hour shift.

Job Responsibilities

  • Cut and thread pipes.
  • Clear plumbing stoppages, repair fittings & valves, line breaks and leaks.
  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
  • Dig trenches for irrigation systems.
  • Maintain job status updates through online work order system.
  • Inspect plumbing installations and conduct required tests to ensure jobs are completed.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair drainage & irrigation systems, sewage disposal systems and other waste lines.
  • Read blueprints and review project plans to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, and standards.
  • Respond to emergency situations, make recommendations, and perform required repairs.
  • Order necessary parts & supplies and maintain required records.
  • Perform soldering and brazing work for plumbing installation and maintenance repairs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a minimum of four years of experience working at the plumbing and pipe fitting trade under a qualified journey level supervisor or completion of an accepted plumber apprenticeship program (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background).

License, Certification, and Other Requirements
  • Current Washington State Journeyman Plumber's license.
  • A current, valid Washington State driver's license
  • City of Seattle Gas Piping License (must be obtained within 12 months of hire)

You’ll be most successful in this position if you have:
  • Highly motivated and a self-starter.
  • Backflow Tester license.
  • Strong technical aptitude to use work order/asset management system, Microsoft Office Suite, or other computer databases.
  • Possess customer service and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.
  • Be able to communicate facts and ideas clearly, both orally and in writing, to a variety of contractors, vendors, and department personnel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Be highly motivated and able to work as a team member in a demanding work environment, meeting tight deadlines.
  • Experience in the use of utility locating equipment.

Additional Information

  • Depending on work, may be required to work varying shifts.
  • May be required to work on-call (additional compensation is provided for this work)
  • Current shift schedules are 4/10 (4 days a week – 10-hour days)


Work Environment/Physical Demands/Other:
  • A pre-placement exam, including a respiratory exam is required for this position.
  • Some locations may be performed in confined spaces and in cramped locations or at heights from ladders and scaffolds.
  • May require handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors and in all inclement weather conditions.
  • May be required to perform work over and in water, on ladders scaffolds and lifts.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend for extended periods and lift in excessive of 50 pounds.
  • Depending on business needs, you may be required to obtain a respirator fit test.


Current Washington State driver's license. A current, "FULL" driving abstract from the Department of Licensing submitted upon offer of employment. Candidates with a driving history that does not meet our current safety standards will be disqualified from consideration. Current City of Seattle Employees in a driving position may be required to submit an updated abstract.

The full salary range for this position is $42.95- $46.38 per hour.
