We are looking for an SVP of Membership, an integral part of our senior executive team who will have complete oversight of how the MMA builds membership value, including positioning, benefits, engagement, communications, and the supporting strategies, systems and processes.


Most importantly, a successful head of membership will ensure that membership programs are in place to support the MMA’s goal to inspire, build capabilities, and drive business impact through marketing transformation and act as both a source of membership insights to the broader team and as an advocate for member needs and interests. This is a demanding role which will require the successful candidate to quickly move between the distinctive cultures and organizational constructs of our many members while building enduring trust, followership and partnerships.


In a time of unprecedented opportunity for the MMA, the position requires both strategic vision and strict adherence to the processes required to ensure effective membership growth and retention. Responsibilities include:



1) Maintaining high levels of member retention and renewal by overseeing various processes to engage members and maximize member value and perception of value across the diverse membership. This includes new member onboarding, account management, member communication strategy, and cross-departmental integration to ensure MMA is positioned to support member needs.




2) Facilitating deeper and broader engagement to extend the value of membership within member companies. This includes tracking and optimizing member registration and attendance to MMA events, participation in the MMA’s boards and working groups, implementing MMA’s tools & research, leveraging MMA’s resources & subject-matter experts, and other activities as relevant to each member.




3) Promoting new and existing MMA member resources, programs, and engagement opportunities, including but not limited to master classes, events, training opportunities, and other opportunities to promote MMA’s industry knowledge-base & community for the benefit of member companies. This includes overseeing the creation of various marketing assets designed specifically for MMA members, including one-pagers, presentation material and email copy.



4) Oversight of membership engagement metrics, systems and processes to ensure that the renewal and retention process is efficient and effective, including the Membership Engagement Index tool, annual budgeting and financial reporting as well as oversight of invoicing and renewal templates administered by the Membership Manager.



5) In partnership with the President & COO, manage various peer groups designed to foster a tight-knit community of marketing & media executives, and create highly valuable spaces for cross-industry discussion and dialogue that generate actionable insights for the MMA Global leadership team.




6) Develop and disseminate internally an annual MMA Membership Strategy - a framework for Membership success that positions MMA for continued, exponential growth, and cultivates a member base who are proud to affiliate with our association and who find meaningful experiences within our programs



7) Oversight and leadership related to all MMA membership policies (member dues, categorizations, cancellations)



8) Work closely with the Database Manager on membership database growth, segmentation and data hygiene practices, as well as creating dashboards and workflows to facilitate business intelligence.



9) Other support activities to positively affect member and prospect perceptions of the MMA including participation in MMA events, dinners, webinars, and other opportunities to get in front of existing and/or potential members.



10) Day to day management of the membership development manager




IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate should possess most, if not all, of the following:


  • Bachelors or more advanced degree in marketing, communications, journalism or related field with at least 10 years of membership/non-profit experience.


  • Experience in trade or professional association, preferably in media, advertising, digital, or other related industry. Experience with marketing and digital media is a plus, familiarity with, or prior career in marketing and/or the marketing ecosystem is preferred.


  • The right candidate must be able to be consultative, persuasive, and possess a desire to be helpful. Strong written, verbal communication, creative problem-solving and interpersonal skills as well as a collaborative work style. Public presentation skills are helpful.


  • Effective organizational skills, such as the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines despite limited notice and excel in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.


  • Experience at cultivating followership among a seasoned and tight knit internal team to matriculate into and promote a collaborative work environment, while also having an ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.


  • Entrepreneurial drive to make things happen and a strong orientation toward growth are both very highly valued.


  • A firm understanding of how to develop and execute strategic and operational plans is helpful. Sound financial management and the ability to set appropriate budgeting goals and track against them is essential.


  • Passion and commitment to the values, mission and goals for supporting the transformation of marketing


  • A confident, self-assured presence; a highly refined sense of diplomacy.
