Job Description

Who We Are

UnitedMasters is building a marketplace that connects artists, brands and fans - empowering artists to earn and grow. UnitedMasters has taken the bold step of building a music distribution service that, radically, puts artists first - disrupting the legacy music business by letting up-and-coming artists distribute their music directly to fans through streaming services while maintaining ownership of their master recording rights and up to 100% of royalties. Through the combination of UnitedMasters' music distribution platform and its deep ties to brands, UnitedMasters enables independent artists and changemakers to grow and earn unlike any other platform.

The UnitedMasters team is made up of musicians, marketers, engineers, and storytellers with backgrounds from YouTube, SoundCloud, Pandora, Facebook, Uber, Dropbox, Complex, VICE, and more. We work hand in hand with the award-winning creative teams that forge those innovative partnerships at Translation (our in-house creative advertising agency).

UnitedMasters is looking for a systems-thinking Product Manager with a strong technical background to lead the future of creator payments on our platform.

What You'll Do

In this role you will work closely with engineering, design and business teams to build and scale our payments business:

  • Track and measure the performance of our products, run experiments, and make necessary adjustments to improve Artist delight.
  • Improve our existing payment systems to make them more efficient, secure, and artist-friendly.
  • Work with research to gather and understand user feedback, and incorporate it into your product roadmap.
  • Develop a deep expertise in how music royalties are accounted and paid out to rights holders.
  • Be the product owner for all of our external and internal facing royalty + payments products, including the Product point of contact for all future third-party partnerships.
  • Develop and launch new payment functionality that removes the friction for Artists to get paid faster and more transparently.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Three must-haves to be successful in this role:

  • Customer obsession with a strong bias for action.
  • Experience as a product manager on complex, payments-based products.
  • Exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to effectively communicate your thinking.

Skills / Qualifications:

  • Proven experience translating big, ambiguous problems into clear plans.
  • 2+ years growing and optimizing a payments-related product
  • Documenting requirements, and managing workflow (ideally using JIRA/Confluence).
  • Strong technical skills and ability to explain complex systems that you've built or managed. Experience as an engineer is a plus.
  • 5+ years experience in product management, launching features from start to finish.
  • Working with third party APIs and SDKs, and discussing technical problems with engineers and other stakeholders.
  • SQL proficiency.
  • You know how to make tradeoffs between speed, scale, and cost.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years growing and optimizing a payments-related product
  • 5+ years experience in product management, launching features from start to finish.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Documenting requirements, and managing workflow (ideally using JIRA/Confluence).
  • You'll be part of a fast-paced, collaborative environment where you can make a real impact.
  • If you are a highly motivated and experienced payments professional who is looking for a challenging and rewarding opportunity, we encourage you to apply for this position.
  • You'll be able to use your skills and creativity to solve real-world problems.
  • Strong technical skills and ability to explain complex systems that you've built or managed. Experience as an engineer is a plus.
  • Proven experience translating big, ambiguous problems into clear plans.
  • Working with third party APIs and SDKs, and discussing technical problems with engineers and other stakeholders.
  • You'll be working on category-defining technology with a chance to make a real impact on the music industry.
  • SQL proficiency.
  • You know how to make tradeoffs between speed, scale, and cost.
  • You know how to use the javascript debugger in Chrome or Safari.
  • Bonus points if you have experience paying out revenue to creators.
  • You'll have the opportunity to work with some of the most talented, independent Artists in the music industry.
  • You have built a web app (HTML/Javascript + API) before, even as a hobby.

Salary Hiring Range: $170,000 - $200,000

Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our size and industry, and are one part of many compensation, benefits and other reward opportunities we provide (e.g. bonus, stock options, 401(k) match, etc.)

Individual pay rate decisions are based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company. We expect the majority of the candidates who are offered roles at our company to fall healthily throughout the range based on these factors.

The range above is for the expectations as laid out in the job description, however we are often open to a wide variety of profiles, and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced (or more senior) than this job description as posted. If that ends up being the case, the updated salary range will be communicated with you as a candidate.

The salary range above is for the NY/CA. As a company, we have a location based strategy, which means the salary range could be lower or higher than this if the role is hired in another location.
