About The Organization


invests in Black teachers who believe in the genius, power, and beauty of Black children. As a social entrepreneurial venture, BTC provides professional development, products, and services for Black educators working with Black students. BTC’s work centers around our that seeks to represent the ideological and instructional manifestations of education as a vehicle for liberation for Black people as represented across the Black teaching tradition translated into a 21st-century context.


BTC’s work and pedagogical framework are grounded in the socio-political theory of Black Self-Identity and Self-Determination. We marry our pedagogical framework with a critical interrogation of mainstream best practices and emerging innovations in teaching and learning, Black child development, and the spectrum of disciplines that intersect with Black children and Black educators' educational experiences. BTC aspires to be the leading expert and service provider for supporting the success of Black K-12 public schools while expanding our impact across the American South and to urban centers serving high concentrations of Black students.


THE ROLE


Reporting to the VP, Operations, Administration, Talent, & Strategy (OATS), the Director of Human Resources is charged with building and leading the people function to ensure BTC’s life cycle of talent (i.e. planning, recruiting, selecting, hiring, onboarding, developing and supporting, retaining, and offboarding) centers our core values and attracts, develops and retains exceptional and qualified staff of team members.


The Director of HR will develop and lead the execution of the HR strategy through staff experience, workforce planning, talent and performance management, employee relations, and compensation and benefits. Working backwards from our vision, mission and values, the strategies you create and deliver will enable us to scale our impact. Your work will also promote our culture and address any employment-related risks or issues. Lastly, you will expertly use data and analytics as well as direct experience to generate talent insights, while ensuring all our processes position the BTC team to maximize their impact on our work.


THE CANDIDATE


We are looking for a strong systems-level strategist with systems-level strategist with well-rounded human resource experience who is inspired by the opportunity to develop, implement, manage and maintain people-centered systems and resources that support our staff to have clear goals, access to top-notch benefits, access to strong professional development resources, and an affirming experience as a member of our staff. Our ideal candidate brings a broad spectrum of experience to this position from prior work in HR leadership roles, including experience in talent management, learning and development, workforce planning, employee relations and people operations. The Director of Human Resources will ultimately fuel our staff’s aptitude to positively impact the Black teacher and Black student experience and must be excited by an opportunity to take our big picture vision and develop strategies, build systems and also execute the details within our HR department (putting people in JustWorks, collecting performance reviews, etc). They will be compulsively responsive, and possess outstanding project and resource management, business operations, collaboration, networking, and communication skills.


BTC staff is concentrated in the American South. We have a hiring preference for candidates in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana, where our programmatic work is focused over the next two years.


Primary Responsibilities


Performance Management & Evaluation (40%)


  • Develop a company-wide performance management framework and evaluation process that is tailored to the unique needs of a Black liberatory organization
  • Research, develop, implement and manage an annual review process geared toward employee growth, development and internal and external equity


Professional Development & Employee Relations (25%)


  • Assess organizational needs and design/identify and implement coherent and scaffolded learning experiences for employees and managers
  • Facilitate learning experiences around functional skills and competencies
  • Own organization-wide priorities and strategies connected to a positive employee experience and overall staff culture
  • Manage an LMS that provides annual and on-demand employee trainings
  • Develop, revise and implement organizational policies and processes ensuring legal compliance
  • Maintain an accurate employee handbook


HR Generalist (25%)


  • Handle all day-to-day HR functions and responsibilities including, but not limited to, payroll, onboarding, off-boarding and compliance
  • Provide HR leadership and consultation to the organization, responding to employee questions and concerns about company programs, policies and other HR-related topics
  • Manage the organization’s HRIS and the relationship with our PEO


Talent Management & Recruiting (10%)


  • Oversee management of a pipeline of qualified candidates to ensure that BTC has the appropriate staffing levels and employees have the skill sets needed to achieve organization and individual goals
  • Collaborate with hiring managers to develop recruiting materials including job descriptions, screening questions and hiring activities to ensure a seamless and high-quality hiring experience
  • Build compensation and benefits structures


Experience


EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, & QUALIFICATIONS


  • 7+ years of human resource management experience required
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP highly preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Strong strategic, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Exceptional multitasking and organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated experience leading the HR function in a startup environment at a senior level
  • Lived and/or professional experience in non-profit (e.g., school/district, policy, philanthropy, etc.) in the South/Southeast region of the U.S.
  • Proficiency with or ability to quickly learn the organization’s workspace tools, including Google Workspace, Slack, JazzHR and Asana
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related law and regulations across jurisdictions, particularly in the BTC service areas

LOCATION, SALARY, & BENEFITS


Location: Remote (BTC staff is concentrated in the American South. We have a hiring preference for candidates in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana, where our programmatic work is focused over the next two years.)


Travel: Up to 20%


Start Date: This role is available for immediate start.


Salary: The salary range for this role is $97,000 to $133,000. We take internal and external equity seriously and believe in compensating team members fairly in relation to each other, their qualifications, and their organizational impact. Given our commitment to equity, Black Teacher Collaborative does not negotiate salary offers but carefully determines each salary offer using internal and external benchmarking. You will have an opportunity to discuss salary in more detail in the hiring process.
