Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company is an independent power producer (IPP) and a leading climate-focused investment manager (IM), whose mission is to empower a sustainable world by connecting individuals and institutions with investments in clean energy. Greenbacker’s IPP business segment acquires, owns, and operates income-producing clean energy infrastructure projects (e.g., solar energy, wind power, energy storage) in communities across the country. These assets sell power under long-term contracts to high-credit-quality counterparties, including utilities, municipalities, and corporations. As of 2023, our IPP fleet comprises over 450 projects, representing 3.4 gigawatts of total clean energy production and storage capacity. Within our IM business segment, Greenbacker Capital Management (GCM) serves as the registered investment adviser to five funds focused on green power generation and the energy transition, including private equity investment in growth-stage clean energy companies, across a wide range of sustainable infrastructure and renewables sectors.

Requirements


Job Purpose/Background:


Greenbacker is seeking an experienced real estate fund controller to oversee the accounting, financial reporting, tax, valuation, and related financial compliance for Greenbacker’s newly formed real estate investment fund (the “Fund"). The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience in the field and be responsible for managing the fund administrator, third-party valuation consultant and external auditor.


We are open to candidates in any of our offices (Portland, ME, Montpelier, VT, Denver, CO, New York, NY or remote).


Key Responsibilities


This team member will contribute to the team in a leadership role with direct responsibility for the accounting, internal and external financial reporting, tax, and related financial compliance of the Fund.


  • Coordinate with the Fund’s administrator, auditor, and tax advisor to oversee preparation of the Fund’s tax returns and ensure tax/REIT compliance
  • Responsible for all accounting conclusions related to complex accounting issues
  • Design, document and implement policies and procedures to ensure all reporting requirements and valuations processes are fulfilled efficiently and on time
  • Coordinate with the third-party valuation consultant for the preparation of and review the valuation of the Fund’s investments in the preparation of the Fund’s net asset value (“NAV”) to ensure valuations are completed in accordance with the Fund’s valuation policies, procedures, and controls
  • Review various calculations and reconciliations performed by fund administrator including but not limited to IRR, expense ratios, management fees and carried interest calculations,
  • In conjunction with the fund administrator, oversee preparation of quarterly and annual financial reporting packages, including the consolidated financial statements, footnotes, and SEC filings
  • Manage the Fund's budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Coordinate with the fund administrator to oversee and review the operations and administrative activity of all investment partnerships, including cash management, capital calls, cash distributions, compliance reporting, and valuations
  • Responsible for oversight of the Fund’s third-party administrator, auditor, and tax advisor


Education And Experience


  • Significant accounting experience in real estate fund accounting with strong understanding of US GAAP, financial reporting, fund accounting and NAV reporting required. SEC reporting and REIT compliance experience strongly preferred
  • Entrepreneurial self-starter, ability to operate with limited supervision
  • Experience managing external auditors, fund administrators, and third-party valuation consultants
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills; ability to effectively prioritize multiple projects with high attention to detail
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA with 10+ years of relevant experience; 5+ years of public accounting experience (Big Four or other large international firm) preferred
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
