Job Description

Title: Fellow, LA Social Media & Storytelling

Location: remote, must be based in LA

Reports to: Manager, Digital Communications

About the Role

The time for education justice has arrived. After generations of racial inequity in schools, we have reached a moment where increased political will, community demand, and resources can lead to the reimagination of education - but it can only happen if we elevate the voices and changemaking ability of students of color. At Our Turn, we have a responsibility to stand at the vanguard of the fight, and to walk the talk in how we carry out the work. The Fellow, LA Social Media & Storytelling role will have a unique opportunity to build youth leader capacity and create a digital storytelling pipeline with local high school and/or college students. This work is essential to the growth and transformation of our LA coalition and future impact.

Why Work For Our Turn?

We approach our work with the audacity of believing that students have the power to rewrite the rules of education in our country and the humility to know that thousands have come before us in this fight. We know that young people, especially BIPOC young people, have been shut out by decision makers who shape their educational experience and respond by providing transformational leadership development and grassroots organizing experience that flip the traditional power dynamic on its head. Our team is highly collaborative and works with urgency, passion, and — most importantly — a lot of joy. We create intentional spaces to build our relationships and set aside time to celebrate milestones, problem-solve together, or just share our latest Our Turn swag! We are looking for purposeful, entrepreneurial social justice activists to join us and continue the fight for educational equity.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research on prospective local partners to form relationships and opportunities for collaboration
  • Uplift a minimum of 25 student stories (between now and August 31st) which showcase LA student identities, stories, and perspectives
  • Film, design, and create social media storytelling content to highlight youth leadership and voice
  • Partner with Growth team to engage external partners in social media campaigns, communication efforts, and project-based development opportunities
  • Reports to the Manager, Digital Communications and will collaborate with other communication-based Fellows

Success Profile

  • Demonstrable leadership experience in social justice and/or political causes
  • Must have experience in social media content creation/graphic design, reaching audiences, and recruiting supporters
  • Must be an existing U.S.-based high school or college student living in or around LA, California
  • Highly effective writer with skills in formal and informal writing
  • Highly organized, with a track record of effective project management in school and/or work
  • Experience working in communities of color highly preferred

COMPENSATION

Compensation for this role is $15 per hour with a weekly commitment of 12-15 hours per week. This Fellow position is a part-time staff position and is eligible for an annual home office and professional development stipend.

ABOUT THE PROCESS

Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, June 23rd. Competitive applicants will be invited for a virtual interview. The anticipated start date is July 10th, 2023. If you require assistance and/or accommodations with this application, please contact [email protected]

COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

Our Turn encourages individuals of all identities and backgrounds to apply for this position and is committed to recruiting a team that reflects the diversity of our student movement (BIPOC, members of the LGBTQIA community, first generation college students). Our Turn does not discriminate against any applicant for employment because of race, color, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, nation of origin, disability, age, marital status, military status, or parenthood.
