About the Role
In order to achieve its ambition of serving 80,000-100,000 Fellows over the next decade, Braven is hiring a Director, People Operations who will manage the people processes, including employee relations, compliance, payroll and compensation. As a member of the People & Operations team, you will work across the organization to ensure Braven has compliant, inclusive, equitable and efficient people systems.
This role reports directly to the Vice President, People and manages one Part-Time Temporary Coordinator.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and implement employee and organizational policies, procedures and initiatives to help make the importance of legal compliance and accountability more accessible through documented, clear, equitable and compliant policies in the Employee Handbook and other Braven platforms.
- Empower employees to reach their personal and professional goals at Braven through the total rewards program by communicating, education and supporting those programs.
- Maintain accurate records of compensation quotes, structure and job architecture.
- Manage day-to-day relationship and support from Professional Employer Organization (PEO), TriNet and ensure accuracy in processes and data input for employee population.
- Provide recommendations for annual benefits strategy to senior leadership
- Communicate with team members and managers about payroll schedule, process, systems and training
- Partner with Vice President, People & CFOO on annual equity analysis with regards to compensation, performance, retention, and promotion.
- Own compensation workflow
- Coach, influence and motivate Braven people managers to steward employee policies and programs created to support our culture and commitment to equity, inclusion, belonging and justice.
- Performs verification of employment requests such as background checks, NDAs, media releases, etc.

- Assists PEO in processing unemployment inquiries from multiple states.
- Organizational resource for all eligible leaves
- Payroll & Timekeeping 20%
- Ensure Federal/State reporting (EEO/CA--EEO/ACA-ALE/Unemployment) with PEO as applicable/possible in a quickly growing footprint (currently includes CA, NY, NJ, DE, GA, OH & IL)
- Own and support best practices and maintain thorough documentation on all personnel documents for the lifecycle of the employee.
- Oversee pre-boarding & off-boarding all team members, including full- and part-time employees, externs and contractors.
- Total rewards 20%
- Maintain, process and collect all required forms and documentation
- Oversee Benefits, including coordinating communication and options from PEO with staff, and managing opening enrollment communications and training.
- Processes, aids and maintains leave of absences.
- Other duties as assigned 5%
- Provide thought partnership with the Vice President, People & fellow People Team Directors to inform the Alignment Team of current trends, organizational analytics and recommendations for solutions to serve and support employees at the highest level.
- Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll activities in accordance with compliance requirements including hourly employee management.

- Make recommendations based on industry trends and Braven’s people vision (compensation in collaboration with senior leadership)
Minimum Requirements
- Work Experience: 5+ years of demonstrated excellence in maintaining accurate and complete payroll, personnel records and demonstrated success in implementing new policies and procedures.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with HR systems, process, policy definition, implementation, and change management
- You exemplify Braven’s core values
- Technical Skills and Knowledge: PHR/SPHR or SHRM CP/SCP Certification
- Work Experience: 1-3 years in non-profit field
- Experience exiting a PEO system, including implementing new HRIS, 401k manager, and new benefit structure.
- Proven leadership skills with an ability to explain complex concepts clearly
- Your experiences have informed your belief in Braven’s mission and have prepared you to work with, or for, Braven’s student Fellow population
- You have a demonstrated commitment to DEIJ
- Strong soft-skills to work well with people up and down the organization, stewarding strong relationships through excellent communication skills

Work Demands
- Ability to work in-person in Atlanta (GA), Chicago (IL), Newark (NJ), or New York City (NYC)
- Ability to travel 4-5 times per year.
Additional Requirements
- Must be fully vaccinated and have received the Booster vaccination against COVID-19 and provide proof of such by the date of hire. Individuals may claim exemption from the vaccine requirement for medical or religious reasons. Exempted individuals will be subject to weekly testing if they engage in any in-person work activities.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this position, which depends on prior work experience and our assessment of your demonstrated fit for the role, will likely be between $86,800-$108,400 in Atlanta, $91,300-$114,100 in Chicago, $100,500-$125,600 in Newark or New York City. Braven offers competitive base salaries based on the midpoint of the market among not-for-profit organizations of similar size, with opportunities for salary growth over time. We believe in compensating staff members fairly in relation to each other, their qualifications, and their impact on behalf of the organization, and take internal and external equity seriously. Given our commitment to equity, Braven does not negotiate salary offers; instead each salary offer is determined carefully using external and internal benchmarking. You will have an opportunity to discuss salary in more detail after you begin the application process.
Braven also provides competitive, comprehensive benefits, recognition, and career development. While Braven reserves the right to change benefits at any time, current benefits include:
- Unlimited vacation time in addition to org-wide holidays and week-long shutdowns in July and the end of the calendar year (this is a minimum of 19 days per year)
- Coverage of 85% of health insurance premium for employee and dependents
- A one-month paid sabbatical after 4 years on staff
- Match of your 401K contribution up to 5% of your base annual salary, starting your first full month
Location
We gather in the office two to three days a week. Therefore, we require teammates to live within commuting distance of one of our hubs: Atlanta, Chicago, Newark, or New York City. Each teammate can use at least two flex days per week of their choosing to work remotely. We believe in the magic, connection, and collaboration that happens when people work together face-to-face and we believe in giving people flexibility to focus, balance personal priorities, and save themselves two commutes per week.
