What we do
Rights Intelligence is a purpose-driven start-up enterprise, with an exclusive license to convert the powerful and trusted data of the Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI) into commercial data products. Our culture is friendly, dynamic, non-hierarchical and fast-paced, with a high level of trust. Employees are empowered to fully own and drive their areas of responsibility.
We are dedicated to offering a range of human rights data and technology products that are useful and solve real-world problems.
Our first product to market is Rights Investor – a human rights data subscription service for sovereign ESG fixed income investors, ESG data providers, and anyone conducting country-level risk analysis or human rights due diligence.
Position overview
The Data Scientist will be responsible for updating and improving our data product offerings so that members have access to the best human rights data on the market.
This position will be fully remote, with strong time zone overlap with North America. The position will work closely with HRMI’s Methodology Research and Design Lead, Dr. K. Chad Clay.
Candidates should view this position as a foundational role in a start-up, and be passionate about growing a company quickly, and working towards a mission.
Responsibilities
- Project management: Lead the hands-on development and updating of Rights Investor data series, including new data projects. This will include planning data projects, from the point of conception to implementation and finalisation, as well as meticulous tracking of the process of data creation, dataset construction, and implementation.
- Proactive collaboration: Organise regular meetings and information sessions on current progress, reporting to both Rights Investor colleagues and the Human Rights Measurement Initiative team.
- Data analysis: Independently explore, research, and utilise a variety of data for use in Rights Intelligence products and on the Rights Tracker. Must have a good understanding of the purpose for which the data are being created.
- Programming: Use state of the art statistical techniques and methodologies in both creative and constructive processes, including content analysis, latent variable models, Bayesian Inference, and machine learning.
- Client engagement: Join meetings with current and potential clients/members to understand their data needs, and work with other colleagues to help develop and tailor product solutions accordingly.
Qualifications
- Knowledge and passion for promoting responsible investment practices would be an advantage.
- Collaborative work style and willingness to learn new things in a team context.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Minimum Bachelor's degree in statistics, applied mathematics, data science, economics, political science, sociology, or another related field. A higher qualification or relevant work experience would be welcomed.
- Knowledge and experience with a range of statistical packages and programming languages (at a minimum R, and preferably others such as Stata, JAGS, Stan, and Python).
- Excellent self-motivation and time management skills.
- Knowledge, familiarity, or interest in human rights.
- Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to thrive in a start-up environment.
To apply
Join us at Rights Intelligence and be part of a dedicated team that is working towards a more equitable and just world by making it easier for human rights to be considered by investors globally.
