About The Human Rights Foundation

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that promotes and protects human rights globally, with a focus on closed societies. HRF unites people in the common cause of defending human rights and promoting liberal democracy. Our mission is to ensure that freedom is preserved and promoted worldwide. We seek, in particular, to sustain the struggle for liberty in those areas where it is most under threat.

HRF produces the Oslo Freedom Forum, an annual human rights conference in Norway. For more information on HRF and its work, please visit our website at www.hrf.org. To learn more about the Oslo Freedom Forum, please visit www.oslofreedomforum.com

About The Position

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Communications Assistant. This is a unique opportunity to help a dynamic and high-achieving nonprofit public relations team as it works to significantly increase HRF's global profile and share our advocacy with new communities.

This right candidate will help carry out a press and communications strategy that supports HRF’s fundraising, constituency building, advocacy objectives, and educational events, including the annual Oslo Freedom Forum (OFF). The Communications Assistant will work closely with the rest of the creative department and the policy and program teams.

Responsibilities

  • Using software to track media coverage of HRF and OFF; supporting the creation of quarterly and year-end media reports.
  • Liaising with the creative team to meet creative needs for all public-facing content (i.e., blog posts, press releases, etc.).
  • Vetting journalists and media outlets ahead of flagship Forum and satellite events.
  • Maintaining the schedule of the official HRF podcast series.
  • Drafting and sharing weekly internal media roundups.
  • Assisting in the drafting and sourcing of photos for programmatic materials and reports.
  • Drafting and designing email communications.
  • Tracking outreach to and registration of journalists for the flagship Forum and satellite events; tracking and scheduling interview requests.
  • Maintaining and expanding a database of strategic media contacts; crafting curated media lists for HRF press releases.

Skills & Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work from the New York office is preferred.
  • A strong affinity for HRF's mission.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • An understanding of today’s media landscape and a knowledge of how news is produced in web, print, radio, television, and social media formats.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud applications (i.e., Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign) is preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work well in a collaborative environment, as well as individually
  • A passion for human rights, political freedom, and civil liberties.

Compensation

  • Generous benefits package which includes fully covered medical, dental, vision and life insurance, flex (unlimited) PTO plan and company-paid holiday schedule and many other voluntary benefits
  • Salary range: $50,000 - $55,000/year
