Job Description

AJC’s Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights (JBI) is inviting applications for the Goodkind Human Rights Fellowship, a 12-month position that will begin in September 2023. The Fellowship honors the legacy of E. Robert Goodkind, former Chair of JBI’s Administrative Council.
JBI conducts and supports original research and policy analysis on central issues in the field of international human rights. This work is directed at improving the protection of international human rights through the mechanisms and bodies of the United Nations and other international organizations, as well as through the policies of individual governments, and particularly the U.S. government.
The Fellow will be responsible for conducting research and preparing memoranda and reports on human rights-related issues; monitoring and reporting on meetings of relevant bodies and mechanisms of the United Nations, the U.S. Congress, and non-governmental organizations on human rights subjects; preparing advocacy materials and social media content as assigned; and assisting in preparation for and execution of JBI events and programs.
The Fellow will work on human rights subjects of particular interest to JBI, which include monitoring and combating intolerance and discrimination on the basis of religion or belief, including but not limited to global antisemitism; promoting effective domestic and international mechanisms to prevent genocide, protect human rights defenders, and prevent torture; improving the effectiveness of UN human rights mechanisms at addressing human rights crises; and encouraging the U.S. government to adhere to its obligations under international human rights and international refugee law.
The Goodkind Human Rights Fellow does all this while adhering to AJC’s core values: Respect, Teamwork, Integrity, Excellence, and Accountability
Applicants should hold a graduate degree, preferably in law, and have taken specialized coursework on and obtained professional experience working with or undertaking advocacy targeting international human rights mechanisms and/or focused on international human rights law. Experience engaging with U.S. policy related to human rights and/or international organizations is also desirable.
The Fellow will work under the direction of JBI’s Deputy Director from JBI’s offices in New York, with hybrid remote work permitted according to applicable AJC policies. Applicants should be authorized to work in the United States.
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Applicants who have been selected for interviews will be contacted. Salary offered is competitive for early career professionals in the nonprofit sector.
AJC requires all staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID 19, unless one has a legally recognized reason for exemption.
