About The Research Foundation For SUNY At Binghamton
The Research Foundation, founded in 1951, exists to serve SUNY and to capitalize on the scope, scale and diversity of SUNY as an engine of New York State's innovation economy. We are the largest comprehensive university-connected research foundation in the country.

The Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS) program at Binghamton University is one of eight TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education to strengthen participating students' math and science skills. The program's goal is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and encourage them to pursue post-secondary degrees in math and science and, ultimately, careers in the math and science profession. UBMS will have a six-week residential summer program for twenty high school students at Binghamton University, including an additional orientation week. We plan to hold a residential summer program, but depending on COVID-19 policies at Binghamton University, the program may be virtual. The Peer Counselor is a part-time position during the summer program.
Responsibilities
Peer Counselors will work from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon. Hours will be based on program needs. The Summer Program is from June 26th to August 9th, including a week for orientation and training.
Peer Counselors have many responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Promote participant involvement in activities offered by UBMS.
  • Coordinate ongoing formal and informal activities to help UBMS participants connect with each other.
  • Work collaboratively with UBMS staff, Summer Faculty, and other campus/off-campus agencies to facilitate social programs and activities.
  • Implement programs and activities to support participants academic and life successes.
  • Facilitate the resolution of conflicts through mediation and counseling. Refer the student to the Academic Counselor or Director as appropriate if needed.
  • Create a community that enhances a student's University experience.
  • Engage students via virtual platforms such as Zoom, Google Classroom, etc.
  • Coordinate interactive meals with participants through a virtual setting and assist with enforcing behavioral standards and expectations.
  • Create opportunities for students to provide feedback and evaluate UBMS programs and services. Channel student feedback to the appropriate sources.
Requirements
  • College Sophomore and above in good academic standing
  • Experience working or mentoring high school students
  • Experience using Zoom, Google Classroom, and other virtual platforms preferred
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines
Preferred
  • Previously held leadership positions highly desirable
  • Recent graduates and graduate students are encouraged to apply
Additional Information
Salary Range: $15.00 per hour for 40 hours a week
