Role Purpose Statement

The primary objectives of the workers’ compensation advocate are:

  • Ensure that this is a consistent for all injuries, and coordinates the effective flow of claims information.
  • Coordinate daily claim activities to reduce the cost of each claim from day one.
  • Serve as an advocate for all injured workers.
  • Educate the injured workers on claims process.
  • Improve the quality of workers’ compensation claim handling practices.

Main Accountabilities

  • Demonstrate clear recognition of legal issues; ensure that they are elevated to the appropriate claim consultant based on the complexity of the situation.
  • Serve as a sounding board for the injured worker and facilitate questions about workers compensation benefits.
  • Facilitate the resolution of claims by aiding with communication between the injured worker, the adjusters and all other parties involved in the claim management process.
  • Initiate contact with injured employee immediately upon notification of injury and maintain open communication throughout the life of the claim by building trust with the injured worker.
  • Assist with transitional duty program and accommodation process.
  • Identify and help reduce unnecessary delays in the process.
  • Communications should be timely, concise and accurate.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships while becoming a part of the organizations culture,
  • Monitor claim for utilization of nurse case management and escalate accordingly.
  • Review employee’s diagnosis and next steps with medical treatment, including diagnostic testing or specialist referral.
  • Contact the treating physician following the injured employee’s appointment to obtain diagnosis, work restrictions, and treatment plan.
  • Exhibit a high level of competence and performance in written and verbal communications.
  • Model corporate values and participate as required in groups, initiatives, and advisory boards.
  • Ensure that medical treatment is provided as efficiently and effectively as possible to the injured worker.
  • Communicate with the claim adjuster, sharing information to ensure appropriate handling of each claim.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Qualifications:

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Associates degree or equivalent education and /or work experience preferred but not required.
  • Counseling background
  • Ability to prioritize

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Empathetic listening skills coupled with innate curiosity
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make decisions in accordance with departmental standards
  • Travel required for training, site visits, and corporate meetings
  • Motivated self-starter able to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship-building and collaboration skills
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and follow-up skills
  • Computer operating skills including but not limited to, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint (experience with Risk Connect and Risc-Fax/Luminos)
  • Previous experience with Workers’ Compensation a plus.
