Job Description
The Vice President, Business Unit Leader at NV5 will lead the operations, technical and administrative staff/teams for the business unit, and work cross-functionally with other business units in the vertical.
This key leadership role will optimize and scale business within their business unit. Key focus areas for this role will be to align operations with a focused vision and strategy for achieving high margin profitability; identify, prioritize, and capture market opportunities; attract, retain, and develop talent; facilitate cross selling across the NV5 portfolio; and optimize or improve operations within their businesses. Within the NV5 EHS Vertical, our businesses and services are diverse, from remediation services to highly specialized permitting and compliance services. This role is expected to deliver a best-in-industry consulting practice at that is client-centric through developing and empowering talent with the business unit, in addition to, cross-collaboration and cross-pollination of services and talent across business units and verticals.
The business unit leader will have an extensive environmental consulting or engineering background, be a strategic thinker with deep experience directing operations (e.g., teams, systems, projects), have implemented growth strategies, have successfully driven and created a positive culture based on KPIs, and successfully developed a high-functioning team. The business unit leader will have experience setting and meeting budget goals for revenue, profitability, and growth. The business unit leader understands how to develop meaningful goals and create accountability for their team so that the business meets its performance objectives of organic growth and profitability. The business unit leader has an outstanding ability to motivate, engage, and drive collaboration. A desire to lead by example, to coach by “doing”, and a willingness to “do what it takes” and dive into details personally is critical to the success of this role.
This business unit leader annually reviews their operations and completes an organizational analysis presented to the COO which recommends potential changes to structure, process, and priorities as well as develops a strategic plan which includes operational budget for gross revenue, net revenue, and profitability of their business unit. The business unit leader understands our target markets and ensures alignment with the technical team and engages with staff to drive operational performance to meet objectives. This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer, EHS Vertical.
Responsibilities
A DAY IN THE LIFE
  • Identify key growth initiatives including client markets to grow and cross-selling opportunities working with your team
  • Set performance and technical objectives for teams and manage the team to meet them
  • Budgeting, forecasting, and P&L reviews with COO and EHS Vertical Controller
  • Execute a strategic plan consistent with NV5’s strategy, and establish/meet business unit metrics in partnership with the COO
  • Engage with, communicate regularly with, and develop talent across the business
  • Lead the operational and cultural evolution of the business unit for successful outcomes
  • Position NV5 as the technical leader in the industry by leading our technical team through technical thought leadership, a focus on technical quality, and client service
  • Oversee safety, health, and environmental issues involving the operations to ensure the safety of team members and to remain in compliance with state and federal regulations in collaboration and consistent with other business units within the vertical and the direction of the COO and the NV5 Safety Officer
  • Conduct Talent Reviews and building the subsequent development and succession plans
  • Developing operational objectives for key employees and managing to key performance objectives (KPIs) to meet growth and profitability goals
  • Partner with cross-divisional senior operational leadership to support the development of integrated offerings to the market, consistent project deliverables across business units, and consistency in our quality program
  • Retention, recruiting and hiring of key staff
  • Lead the business unit to accelerate organic growth through a strong client portfolio and strategic client selection, including segmentation by market and cross-selling across offices and verticals
  • Maintain key client relationships with top 20 clients in business unit as senior leader for customer satisfaction and technical performance continuity
  • Maintain connection to technical work through billability on client projects and/or bring new business sales into the organization with a billability goal of 50-60% on client projects or $2M in new client project wins
  • Deliver operational excellence through consistent project delivery and quality and strong resource management practices
  • Foster a high-performance culture through highly visible leadership that embraces continuous improvement, is client focused, conducts business in the highest ethical manner and promotes inclusive behavior designed to enable each member of the team the ability to achieve personal and professional satisfaction
  • Develop a vision that promotes the overall success of the business

Minimum Qualifications
  • Strong continuous improvement skillset and ability to identify needs, develop a strategy for improvement, and communicate and execute throughout an organization of 50+ employees
  • Experience and proven accomplishments leading a growing operation ($10M+ in revenue and 8-10% revenue growth with double digit profitability) across multiple geographies with a quantifiable record of business and leadership achievements
  • Demonstrated leadership, employee development, organizational advancement, and successorship accomplishments
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a high growth organization, working collaboratively with all functional support areas
  • Passion for engaging, energizing, and driving collaboration across a broad, dispersed team with capability of getting results through others

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate others to achieve established business and sales objectives, and to create a culture of achievement and professionalism
  • 15+ years of experience in high end environmental engineering or consulting, preferably in a high-growth environment where systems and processes had to be established or refined and integration of multi-faceted and geographically dispersed teams was needed
  • Represent the firm and the leadership team professionally at all times, internally and externally
  • Deep financial acumen. Previous experience managing a P&L Strategic planning and implementation
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Geology or related
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in creating positive cultural organizational change and driving profitable organic growth within existing organizations
  • Master’s degree, professional license (PE, PG, CIH, etc)
  • Passion for solving environmental challenges and an understanding of the value of integrated environmental solutions
The pay range for this position is $220,000-$280,000 per year; based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. NV5 may provide restricted stock units, sign-on bonuses, stay bonuses, or relocation allowances as part of the compensation package. Medical, dental, and vision insurance are also offered to full-time employees, along with Flexible Spending Accounts and Health Savings Accounts, with employee and employer contributions. 3 weeks of Paid Time Off a year for full-time employees along with 8 paid holidays a year. 401(k) savings plan; Company Paid Basic life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance; Company Paid Short-term and long-term disability insurance are also provided.
