At Rethink Food, our mission is to create a more sustainable and equitable food system — one where every person has access to healthy and affordable food. We develop inventive programs to address food insecurity, use excess food, foster economic development, and ensure that everyone can enjoy delicious, high-quality, culturally-celebrated meals. Since April 2020 we’ve made over 10.5 million meals, rescued ~2 million pounds of perfectly good excess food, and invested over $35 million directly into local communities. In pursuit of our goal, we’ve partnered with over 400 restaurateurs (including chefs from three-Michelin-star restaurants and neighborhood diners alike), small business owners, and community-based organizations in New York and five other cities nationwide. As a result of our size and the diversity of our team, we operate more like a startup than a traditional nonprofit, working with agility and forgoing the bureaucracy and red tape of more legacy organizations.

The Strategy and Analytics externship position requires an innovative, flexible individual who reports directly to Rethink’s C-suite and ensures delivery of the most high-priority initiatives across the organization. This role develops data-driven insights, optimizes department processes, spearheads special projects, and is responsible for stewarding the strategic vision of the nonprofit. The Extern works closely with the CEO, CFO, CNO (Chief Network Officer), and CPO (Chief People Officer) to define organizational direction, as well as “boots on the ground” employees– undoubtedly the most important team members at Rethink Food– who serve our mission each and every day.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with CEO on ad-hoc initiatives
• Work closely with executive management of Rethink Food to finalize and implement a recently developed three-year strategic plan, providing cross-functional support across Rethink
• Support development of internal communications, by increasing transparency in decision-making across the organization, preparing all-staff content, and reviewing comms channels + meeting hygiene standards
• Lead new strategic initiatives, including cross-functional programmatic changes and implementing accountability metrics, to ensure delivery of highest organizational priorities
• Craft external communications, such as for Board meetings, institutional and governmental grants, and funding pitches
• Drive business decisions via data storytelling through dashboards, analytical memos and key performance metrics
• Optimize business processes, deep-diving into departments to support project prioritization and best practices
• Develop data-driven business insights through analytics, financial modeling, resource forecasting, and requirements analyses

• Excellent communication skills, with an ability to synthesize inputs and influence wide-scale projects across multiple levels and functions of an organization
• 2-3 years of experience in management consulting, investment banking, private equity, or fast-paced startup
• Strong analytical and financial modeling skills
• Ability to spearhead critical initiatives that integrate quantitative and qualitative analyses to drive clear, communicable results
• Excitement to collaborate with a multidisciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team
• Strong track record of end-to-end ownership in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
• Flexible and independent self-starter; ability to run confidently with minimal supervision
