Who We Are


The Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability supports interdisciplinary research across the entire campus, engaging faculty, staff and students with external organizations in strategic, long-term partnerships that take knowledge to impact. The Center funds a wide range of interdisciplinary research, facilitates fellowships and internships, and hosts a wide variety workshops, conferences and other meetings both on and off campus.


What You Will Do


We are seeking a highly experienced and dynamic Strategic Partnerships Relationship Manager to join our team at Cornell Atkinson. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a portfolio of key strategic relationships, coordinating closely with the outreach activities of the Division of University Relations, and supporting knowledge-to-action collaborations between Cornell University and non-academic partners.


As a key external-facing representative of our organization, the Strategic Partnerships Relationship Manager will originate, manage, and expand partnerships with external organizations, in close coordination with the Division of University Relations, focused on co-creating research and pathways to real solutions on key sustainability challenges. The role requires a natural connector, energetic facilitator, and transdisciplinary translator, possessing strong strategic and opportunistic instincts.


Key Responsibilities


  • Exhibit a proactive and adaptable approach, taking necessary actions to drive progress, innovate, and mitigate risks for mutual benefits and positive outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Cornell and partner leadership to manage joint Request-For-Proposals, review proposals, monitor grantee performance, and maintain relationships with grantees.
  • Keep organized records of partnerships, activities, and agreements using systems such as Box, Monday.com, Slack, and email.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the outreach efforts of the Office of Federal Relations and the Media Relations Office (within the Division of University Relations).
  • Undertake special projects as assigned by management, leveraging expertise and resources to contribute to Cornell Atkinson's strategic objectives.
  • Work closely with Cornell Atkinson staff across various teams to support the organization's mission and projects.
  • Cultivate and strengthen strategic relationships, collaborating with stakeholders to develop and implement partnership strategies in alignment with Cornell Atkinson's mission.
  • Participate in key sustainability events, promoting Cornell Atkinson's mission and goals while networking to identify partnership opportunities and build relationships with external organizations.
  • Manage multiple external partnerships with various priorities, ensuring clear communication and timely information flow among all parties.

This position will be fully remote but will need to be based the Metro Washington DC area to meet with partners and clients on a regular basis. There will be infrequent travel to Ithaca, NY a few times per year.


What You Will Need


  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Strong facilitation and communication skills with diverse audiences - verbal, written, editing, and visual communication.
  • Demonstrates a strong alignment with Cornell Atkinson's mission and values, coupled with a results-oriented mindset focused on delivering impactful outcomes
  • Proven expertise in project planning, implementation, action planning, and reporting project status, with an ability to problem-solve and drive project success.
  • Strong track record of successfully leading programs and projects involving diverse stakeholder organizations, including business, government, academia, NGOs and other non-profits, entrepreneurs, foundations, and high net worth individuals.
  • Demonstrated experience managing inter-organizational relationships in non-academic and academic organizations, with a strong preference for non-academic experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in strategic partnerships, business development, or relationship management
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
