Job Description
What to Expect
The candidate will work as a member of Tesla’s Materials Test Group to support material level weathering and surface durability test activities. The role includes overseeing a wide variety of tests and associated test equipment, ranging from simple scratch testing devices to large environmental chambers. The position will be based in Fremont (California, USA) within the Materials Test Lab.
What You’ll Do
  • Develop, author, and ensure conformance to laboratory standard operating procedures
  • Perform a wide variety of testing under demanding project timelines. Areas of focus include accelerated weathering chamber testing involving heat, UV, and/or humidity, as well as surface durability testing of cosmetic surfaces, such as scratch, abrasion, stone impingement, coating adhesion and resistance to chemicals
  • Support engineering staff in the root cause analysis of test failures and development of new test methods
  • Evaluate visual condition of various cosmetic materials and coatings before and after environmental and abuse testing
  • Management of laboratory assets, ensuring all equipment is maintained, calibrated, and serviced
  • Support management in the procurement, purchase, and installation of new equipment
  • Independently complete materials tests and issue reports for approval. Create and manage “Test Incident Reports” documentation to facilitate and track corrective actions
  • Conduct testing in an extremely fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Interface with a broad spectrum of internal customers to coordinate sample preparation, test updates and observations
What You’ll Bring
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish effective working relationships
  • An ability to effectively handle multiple priorities, meet deadlines and manage time independently; must maintain top level professional integrity and appearance throughout
  • Practical knowledge and working experience within a materials or environmental testing lab, including basic understanding of different type of materials
  • Experience working with hazardous materials, with a willingness to exhibit and promote health and safety across the team
  • Knowledge, understanding and a track record of conformance to ISO 17025 is advantageous
  • Familiarity with materials-centric test standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO, SAE)
  • Experience operating and maintaining environmental or other test chambers is preferred. Experience working with other materials test equipment, hand tools and sample preparation equipment is a plus
