We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Technician in our Energy and Advanced Concepts division in support of the characterization and assembly of precision components within the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Target Fabrication Group in Livermore, CA.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Handles and inspects “high value” and extremely fragile components.
• Provides accurate and organized documentation.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.
• Constructs and installs multiple diagnostic backlighters for different target types.
• Operates and optimizes robotic assembly stations.
• Works in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
• Operates computer controlled and manually operated assembly stations and provides dimensional inspection data on meso-scale components.
• Hohlraum/LEH insertion, inner shield and HDC window installation.
• Fabricates prototype components from engineering prints, informal drawings and sketches.
• Requires regular use of computers, instrumentation, multi-axis assembly stations, microscopes, and metrology equipment including OCMMs.
• High vacuum leak testing of components at cryogenic temperatures.
• Bonding tasks after final integration steps are completed.
• Performs assembly tasks in a class 100 cleanroom including
• Target base, subassembly, and final target dimensional metrology.
• Assembles diagnostic band subassemblies for various experiments.
• Interacts with resident staff and other engineering, scientific, and technical personnel from a variety of laboratory organizations.
• Capsule fill tube assembly inspections to verify suitability prior to further assembly process steps.
• Monitors all operations for regulatory and safety compliance.
• Diagnoses and corrects operational problems or trouble sources in equipment or tests.

Job Qualifications:

• Analytical ability to understand detailed instructions, drawings and specifications.
• Special skills and expertise to use complex equipment or experimental techniques.
• Ability and willingness to work on systems which have unusual conditions such as high pressure, high voltage, high energy, cryogens, or radioactive materials.
• Knowledge of computer operations and applications pertinent to the field required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) Security Clearance is desired
• Training and/or experience from the military or a trade school highly desirable.
• Works in a lab environment requiring long periods of standing, walking, bending and lifting up to 25 lbs.
• Ability to diagnose complex mechanical/electrical problems and find effective solutions.
• Communication skills necessary to write and record precise information.
• Typically requires associate's degree or equivalent with five or more years of experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education
