We're looking for a Mechanical Engineer – Materials Engineering. You will be responsible for the engineering and design of various systems related to the additive manufacturing capabilities supporting polymer additive manufacturing facilities and other fabrication activities. The successful candidate will provide engineering for new systems and upgrades to existing hardware, which will also involve project management. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Generate detailed plans, schedules, and budgets for project activities.
  • Prepare supporting safety and engineering documentation and participate in engineering design reviews.
  • Interface with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory to complete various projects.
  • Participate in engineering testing operations, analyze results, and write reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Oversee the detail design process, component part fabrication, and unit assembly.
  • Derive engineering requirements, develop conceptual designs, and perform supporting analyses of mechanical systems, test prototypes, and associated diagnostics.
  • Work independently as well as a part of a multidisciplinary team.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level

  • Perform independent technical analysis to provide solutions for a diverse range of moderate to complex issues.
  • Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results based on analysis of multiple, largely identifiable factors.
  • Provide engineering solutions to resolve moderately complex technical and programmatic issues.

Qualifications

  • Fundamental knowledge of material properties and manufacturing methods.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Experience using standard project management practices.
  • Fundamental knowledge of and/or experience with design principles.
  • Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Fundamental knowledge of two or more of the following: engineering hardware design, systems engineering, manufacturing techniques, testing processes, and FEA structural and thermal analysis.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.

Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level

  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering hardware design, fabrication, or testing processes and ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
