Job Description
Join us at Phase Four as we deliver cutting edge electric propulsion to thousands of spacecraft over the next decade. We enable large constellations of satellites in low earth orbit (LEO) and beyond. Our plasma thruster enables new missions for satellites with next-generation propellants, while eliminating the primary failure points of legacy technologies.


Job Summary:


The Director of People will oversee the day-to-day operations and activities of the Human Resource (HR) department ranging from design, implementation and management of HR functions and services, consultation on complex or sensitive personnel matters, employee relations, administering pay, benefits, and leave, and enforcing company People Operations policies and practices. S/he will provide leadership, guidance, advice, and mentorship, including recommendations regarding critical matters pertaining to human resource services. This involves consultation with senior leadership and management to troubleshoot and resolve issues and ensure the division is providing services that meet the needs of the Company's workforce, while maintaining compliance across all People functions. This position currently reports to the General Counsel.


The Director of People will also be responsible for managing the company's Talent Acquisition team member who leads all employee talent acquisition, onboarding, and talent retention.


Supervisory Responsibilities:


  • Manage the talent acquisition manager
  • Build and maintain the People team


Job Responsibilities:


  • Works with the executive leadership, staff, and key collaborators on building and implementing HR programs, policies, and procedures in support of the organization's mission
  • Researches new HR strategies and practices to continually evolve the People Operations function.
  • Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments. This may include safety training, anti-harassment training, professional licensure, and aptitude exams and certifications.
  • Provides support to the Company on special projects and initiatives, including compliance, that impact HR functions/services.
  • Oversee the Talent Acquisition team responsible for recruiting, interviewing, and hiring qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
  • Oversees and implements new hire orientation and employee recognition programs.
  • Serves as an active participant in HR planning and strategy discussions, identifying issues and options to support executive decision making, and ensuring the Company's decisions are carried out effectively.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance
  • Oversee the Talent Acquisition team responsible for recruiting, interviewing, and hiring qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
  • Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute HR programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
  • Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.


Required Skills/Abilities:


  • Thorough knowledge of Federal and California employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization's HRIS and talent management systems (Gusto, etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.


Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • SHRM-CP
  • 6+ years of human resource management experience required

Pay Transparency:


  • The base salary range for this position is $125,000 - $150,000. Actual compensation on this range varies based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including prior experience, and skill set.
