Job Description
Title: Marketing and Communications Manager


Classification: Full-Time (40-hour workweek)


Schedule: Monday-Friday 9:00 AM – 5PM with occasional weekend and evening hours.


Department: Administrative


Reports to: Executive Director


Compensation: $70-75,000 DOE, Exempt


About the position:


Lotusland is looking for an innovative marketing professional to design, oversee and implement our core marketing and communications efforts and strategically build an overarching plan to support the Garden’s future.


The successful candidate will generate, design, and leverage content to better engage the public in our mission and drive philanthropic support. The Garden is at a transformative moment in our history and we are looking for a communications expert to help significantly increase our positive impact for the organization.


The Marketing and Communications Manager plans the program and leads the strategy and execution for all marketing activities and collateral development to consistently articulate the Garden’s mission and to grow participation in activities that support our mission, visitation, event tickets, membership, donations, education programs, Garden Shop sales, and volunteer engagement.


This position will lead the strategic development of marketing campaigns aimed to support the Garden, works closely with the Executive Director, and is charged with helping to develop realistic goals, measurable objectives, and budgets for marketing efforts. Central to this role is the partnership with key staff throughout the Garden.


The Marketing Manager must have the drive, talent, and resourcefulness to get projects accomplished without much supervision, and to keep organizational records and maintain our communications channels and Lotusland’s website with current, content rich, and strategic messages and information.


The Marketing and Communications Manager supervises contract employees and vendors for outsourced


printing, graphic design and commercial photo shoots, and serves as the project manager for the print Lotusland


Newsletter (3x year).


The role is responsible for marketing events and activities generated by the public programs, events and development teams, as well as highlighting volunteers, staff, and community partnerships.


This manager champions the Lotusland brand and is responsible for all efforts related to public relations, advertising, media relations, digital and print publications, social media, onsite marketing, and brand trademarks and, licensing.


The manager collaborates with the GWL administrative team to support the Garden’s strategic goals.


The ideal candidate is innovative, creative, multimedia savvy, and extremely organized.


This position requires a team player who can effectively prioritize and strategize, while maintaining a sense of humor. We are seeking an individual who is passionate about history, culture, and the natural world.


Responsibilities include:


Communications and Marketing


  • Creates and coordinates with relevant staff on the Garden’s email marketing (MailChimp); including digital flyers and newsletters, seasonal fundraising appeals, membership correspondence, event promotion.
  • Develops an annual marketing plan and quarterly editorial content calendar.
  • Creates follow up communications for Garden visitors with invitation to participate and creates processes to survey guest experiences.
  • Serves as the project manager for the print Lotusland Newsletter (3x year) and other significant publications as needed.
  • Edits copy to support email communications and drive engagement.
  • Coordinates document management of Lotusland digital collateral including current and historic photographs and video.
  • Keeps continuous record of departmental progress through data and analytics which informs the traditional and social media relations direction and strategy
  • Promotes Lotusland events in a timely and consistent manner.


Public Relations


  • Develops relationships with press/media and serve as point of contact for media.
  • Creates content for media, creates press releases, and coordinates all public communications.
  • Serves as primary media and public relations point of contact for inbound calls or queries and follow up communications
  • Represents the Lotusland brand with the media and the community.
  • Coordinates press visits, fact checking, and media strategies.


Photo Shoots and Licensing


  • Oversees commercial photo shoots including vetting leads, creating contracts, and evaluating successes.
  • Implements and coordinates contracts and agreements regarding use of Lotusland trademarks and assets.
  • Manages all aspects of photo shoots to ensure Lotusland guidelines are followed and the integrity of the collections are maintained.


Design and Content


  • Takes quality photos on both the Garden and campus events and activities to support communication goals and to document accomplishments.
  • Collects information, determines content, writes copy, and takes photos to support the communication needs of the Garden.
  • Contributes content and supports writing, editing, design, and printing process across a variety of projects.
  • Works closely with Lotusland’s Creative Director on design and print projects including organizational materials (brochures, signage, stationary, and more).
  • Ensures that all correspondence, communications, promotional and marketing materials meet the Lotusland’s brand identity strategy.


Social Media and Website


  • Processes website update requests as needed to ensure website information remains current.
  • Facilitates backend updates, bringing in contract web development support as needed.
  • Monitors website’s general email inbox to ensure timely responses to inquiries.
  • Fosters positive community engagement by responding to comments across platforms in a timely, on-brand, and professional manner.
  • Creates social m strategies and content, including a monthly planned content calendar.
  • Manages and monitors social platforms (Facebook, Instagram) and online reputation outlets (Google, Yelp, and TripAdvisor).


Knowledge and Abilities:


  • Experience with Facebook, Vimeo, Instagram front and backend management systems.
  • A passion for the Garden’s mission.
  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and accuracy.
  • A commitment to excellence, teamwork, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience with WordPress management systems preferred.
  • Self-motivated and creative with an aptitude for managing multiple, simultaneous projects and working with a team.
  • Superb written and oral communication skills consistent with AP-style guidelines, including story/message development, copywriting, detailed editing, and excellent grammar. Comfortable with critique and the revision process.
  • Intermediate photo and video skills (photography and editing) required for small projects which are completed in house.
  • A skilled project manager who can keep teams accountable, and keep projects on time and on budget.
  • Experience with email marketing programs (MailChimp preferred), and email marketing metrics.


Qualifications and Experience:


  • Must maintain a valid drivers license and be insurable with company auto policy.
  • BA or BS in Marketing and/or Communications and/or 5 years+ related job experience.
  • Skilled with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams) and Adobe Suite.
  • Experience with marketing platforms including WordPress, Google Analytics, MailChimp, and similar


Work Environment:


  • Occasional driving of company electric golf carts.
  • Frequent standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs and bending with occasional lifting of light to moderate loads (25 lbs)
  • Lotusland’s administrative offices are located in a historic 2-story estate located in a 37 acre garden.
  • General office environment within the garden setting of Lotusland.
  • Frequent work on the telephone and computer (repetitive movement – typing)
  • Requires working outside during events and the ability to comfortably move around the garden.
