Youth Center Coordinator

Department: Community Programs

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Case Manager/Recovery Coach Youth

Hours: Part-time, 15 hours a week, hours vary (late afternoon - evenings, some weekends)

Location: Openings in Round Mt. and Burney


NOTE: THIS OPEN POSITION IS BASED IN ROUND MT AND BURNEY, CA


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Youth Center Coordinator works directly with adolescents, ages 12 -18, who are participating in Hill Country’s Youth Programs. Primary job responsibilities are to plan, coordinate, and facilitate enrichment activities and provide resources, opportunities and support to promote healthy development and successful transitions into adult roles. Our staff provide a safe, enjoyable, and welcoming space at our teen centers in Burney and Round Mountain, with genuine openness and acceptance of all youth. For youth and families experiencing challenges or life stressors, we provide personalized support, aid with problem solving, and link to additional resources when needed.


This is a part-time position at 15 hours a week during after school hours and once a month on weekends for outings or events, plus multi-day camping trips a couple of times a year. Hours during summer months are flexible based on program needs and goals.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Youth Center Coordinator works independently and together with other staff and volunteers, with supervision, support and direction provided by the Youth Program Coordinator, the Behavioral Health Team Leader, and the Behavioral Health Director. Success in this position requires competency and consistency in the areas listed below.


Job responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with youth participants, other staff, and volunteers to plan, facilitate and promote activities, outings, trips, and events that are safe, healthy, enjoyable, and appealing to adolescents with varying interests and needs.

  • Ensure safe and successful operation of the Round Mt and Burney Teen Centers, including providing supervision of all youth and activities. Safety includes developing and promoting a culture that ensures that each individual feels welcome and included, with special effort to engage and support young people in distress or who have experienced harm, marginalization, social rejection, or other adverse life experiences.


  • Proactively ensure that all interactions between you and youth feel friendly, supportive, and helpful.
  • Verbally welcome and establish positive rapport with persons walking in
  • Explore and address youth’s needs, goals, hopes, etc. Emphasis is on identifying needed resources, opportunities, and support for healthy development and advancement toward goals.
  • Seek additional help as needed and activate emergency services, when appropriate.
  • Proactively ensure that the Teen Center feels safe, clean, comfortable and welcoming for all, both inside and outside
  • Answer questions and assist in completing forms
  • Answer phone professionally and compassionately, including crisis calls; refer to appropriate parties
  • Monitor and manage level and flow of activity inside and outside to ensure a positive experience for anyone coming in and a sense of safety and enjoyment for those already present
  • Facilitate referrals to other staff and agencies, as needed
  • Maintain a calm and caring demeanor at all times. When necessary, use de-escalation techniques and promote calming strategies with youth
  • Provide information and referrals in person and on phone
  • Make affirming statements, offer unconditional positive regard, and explore potential benefits of participation
  • Orient new participants to program and activities, inquire about special needs and interests
  • Listen fully, compassionately, and non-judgmentally
  • Be alert and responsive to risks, mental status, general behavior, and other variables


  • Maintain healthy, professional boundaries, practice self-care, and routinely seek supervision and support

  • Ensure sufficient and consistent communication with prospective youth participants, parents and other caregivers regarding activities, outings, etc. Be proactive to successfully address any concerns that arise. This may include face to face meetings, phone calls, or written communication.


  • Provide written descriptions of activities, events, outings for participants and their parents/legal guardians. Obtain permission from parents/legal guardians for participation in outings and events.

  • Promote activities, events, and related information in a variety of ways including using the program’s social media accounts

  • Follow procedures for opening and closing Teen Center, including locking facility and ensuring all youth have been picked up.

  • Transport youth to events/outings in agency vehicle

  • Obtain emergency medical care for youth participants, when needed. Advocate for youth and family needs as appropriate.

  • Help to recruit and develop volunteer pool; delegate tasks to volunteers to expand, improve, and promote success of program and activities

  • Purchase and organize supplies for activities, events, and outings using agency credit card. Adhere to budget and follow procedures appropriately.

  • Collaborate with other staff, use good judgment, and adjust priorities and tasks based on situational factors

  • Participate in weekly supervision, monthly team meetings, all staff meetings, and various trainings

  • Maintain client confidentiality in consultation from supervisor and BH Director

  • Ensure all actions are aligned with Hill Country’s mission, values, and vision.
  • Adhere to Laws, Regulations, Ethical Standards and all relevant Policies & Procedures; make mandated reports as appropriate (in consultation with supervisor)

  • Ensure that the Teen Center is kept neat, clean & safe. Follow procedures to address maintenance and repair needs.

  • Report all unusual situations and incidents.

  • Increase relevant knowledge and skills by participating in available training and learning opportunities. All staff are strongly encouraged to pursue work-related education and professional development.

  • Other projects and tasks as assigned. Self-initiative is both encouraged and appreciated.

Activities occur both indoors and outdoors in a variety of settings, but most day to day activities are based in our teen center facilities in Round Mountain or Burney. We do a variety of day trips. Outdoor recreation is common, including hiking, kayaking, swimming holes, etc. We also go to performances, museums, special events. We have annual camping trips to Lassen Park and to the coast. We also occasionally go on other trips out of the area.

QUALIFICATIONS:

This position requires a high level of responsibility and a commitment to helping young people. Strengths must include natural warmth, openness, and authentic caring and compassion for all people. Must be outgoing, creative, fun, and greatly enjoy teenagers, whose personal styles, interests and identities may be very diverse. Must be well organized, able to facilitate teen group activities effectively, manage stressful situations, and multitask. Must be an excellent communicator and able to manage conflicts and behavioral issues. Must be able to maintain calm at all times and have healthy boundaries. Self-initiative, honesty, integrity, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness are essential.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Must have completed some college coursework in psychology or communication related subjects, plus two years related experience working with youth; will consider other exceptional experience that is relevant to this position


CERTIFICATES/LICENSES:

Must have current and clean CA driver license. Driving a clinic vehicle will be necessary. Must be able to transport minors. Must be a safe driver with no prior history of DUI or reckless driving.


Must pass criminal background check


Within first 90 days must complete Youth Mental Health First Aid, Suicide Prevention and Intervention, CPR. Other trainings will be required in first year.

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to speak publicly and one-on-one in a genuinely kind, caring, and persuasive manner. Must effectively use verbal and nonverbal behavior to convey empathy, concern, competence, and authentic positive regard. Ability to read, write, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Must consistently communicate calmly, respectfully, and effectively during high stress situations or when hearing complaints.


MATH ABILITY:

Must have basic math skills, ability to make simple calculations and estimations


REASONING ABILITY:

Must have very high reasoning skills, especially ability to define problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. For example, must form conclusions about mental status and potential risk based upon observable behavior and known risk factors, then make reasonable decisions regarding appropriate action to be taken.


COMPUTER SKILLS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have good working knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet browsers and related software. Required to become proficient in use of agency’s electronic health record system.


EQUIPMENT SKILLS:

Proficient with standard office equipment including computers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, printers, multi-line telephone systems.
