Job Description

The Vice President of Product Development will orchestrate the end-to-end product development process by collaborating with all departments involved to ensure operational excellence, for new product launches and changes to existing core products.


In this role you will:


  • Manages Formula Evaluation & Stability: track and evaluate all internal and external formula submissions, providing assessment and redirection where needed
  • Outstanding project management skills to ensure projects are managed from product brief all the way into 1st production run.
  • Partners with R&D and CMs on final lab, scale-up, pilot and production standards
  • Manage Product Development for all product categories including but not limited to skin care, make up, hair & body categories.
  • Manages Shade Evaluation: including but not limited to selecting test shades and managing redirection to R&D and CMs to meet approved concept objective and timeline.
  • Collaborate with Innovation and R&D partners to design the product innovation calendar, identifying disruptive product concepts that generate new opportunities for brand growth.
  • Attend industry key trade shows (CosmoProf, MUNY, In Cosmetics, etc) to identify breakthrough product or package opportunities for 3 – 5yrs out
  • Conduct competitive analysis and keep up-to-date on industry trends to inform product development decisions
  • Manages new formula testing: Oversees Tech Transfer Testing/Consumer Panel and key findings
  • Lead a team that drives the product development and reformulation projects, ensuring that all product launches meet Beautycounter’s commitments to performance, safety, sustainability, and responsible sourcing.
  • Oversees necessary reformulations and shade translations, due to regulatory updates
  • Lead cross-departmental collaboration to ensure crucial aspects of product development process are executed according to our SOP’s.
  • Work with project management and other cross-functional partners to ensure product development projects are delivered on time, within budget and in accordance with quality standards, including compliance with mission and FDA regulation.
  • Partner with key cross-functional teams (R&D, RA & Legal) to achieve desired formula claims briefed by Innovation.
  • Identifies formula and shade prototypes and manages briefs to R&D and CMs
  • Manage all contract manufacturing and supplier relationships closely; coordinate with Sourcing, Quality and Procurement teams to ensure that manufacturing and supplier partners are meeting our expectations and delivering high-quality formulas and products in accordance with designated timelines. Ensure on time in full delivery of products.


Experience Requirements:


  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred, preferably an MBA or MSc, in chemistry, green chemistry, biology.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills
  • Required experience in color/makeup product development, with direct experience bring bespoke color cosmetics projects to market on the brand side.
  • Experience in safety testing and claims substantiation (clinical, sensory perception, and/or consumer panels)
  • Dedication to Beautycounter’s mission
  • Team leadership and development experience
  • Experience managing contract manufacturer and supplier relationships.
  • Outstanding cross-functional collaboration
  • Passion for the beauty consumer, market and industry trends; driven to identify opportunities for creativity and innovation.
  • 12+ years of product development experience.


Pay: $250k - $300k for work locations in the United States, with individual pay determined by several factors including, but not limited to, job-related skills, experience, education, and training. Salary ranges are determined in good faith by role, level, and location. As a remote-eligible job, a narrower salary range for a candidate’s preferred location may be available.


Bonus: Additional compensation includes an annual discretionary bonus based on company and individual performance.
