The Grant Manager is part of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science within the School of Engineering (VUSE) at Vanderbilt University. The position is to have a working knowledge and understanding of pre- and post-award grants management to serve the work unit. It requires exercise of independent judgment, initiative, and the ability to make decisions and internal procedures relative to the department’s operations as well as other tasks assigned.
The position will function with a high degree of understanding of University life, policies, and procedures.
The Grant Manager position is pre-award focused but some post-award responsibilities will be required with this position. This is subject to change based on the needs of the work unit.
Duties and Responsibilities
Pre-award responsibilities may include:
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Performs application submission, ensuring deadlines are met
- Develops appropriate budget
- Responds to sponsor requests and questions
- Works directly with the Principal Investigators & collaborators, and will interface with central administrative offices to ensure that the applications meet all university, school and sponsor requirements
- Provides policy guidance and assistance with all aspects of proposal development, administrative forms, sponsor-required certifications and representations, and compliance requirements.
Post-award responsibilities may include:
- Completes timely journal entries as necessary, grant closeouts, etc.
- Human Capital Management (HCM) Costing Specialist
- Assisting on rate setting/implementation for PI/Faculty run Service Center(s)
- Creates budget reconciliation and forecasting reports, and uses these reports to meet regularly with faculty to review their financial situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Ensures compliance with requirements such as effort reporting, financial & progress reporting
- Reviews and approves all expenditures
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree – preference in finance, accounting, or business is strongly preferred
- Advanced working knowledge of research compliance issues & of key federal grant regulations
- Outstanding attention to detail
- Financial Unit Manager (FUM) and Procurement training is preferred
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Strong administrative support skills
- Problem solving skills and ability to be flexible required
- 3+ years of experience in pre- and post-award management experience (both federal and non-federal), required; a combination of education and experience may be considered
- Experience working with investigators on the management of complex research awards and working with a variety of sponsors
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Intermediate Excel skills
