Director of People – Retail Operations

The Director of People will partner with the business and lead a team of Regional People Business Partners to build and execute the people strategy. This operationally focused team will partner cross functionally with business leaders, field management teams and subject matter experts and deliver business objectives. Scope of responsibility includes staffing and selection, engagement and retention, performance management and associate relations, and business performance improvement.


Essential Activities

  • Monitors technician turnover closely and leverages exit and stay interviews and escalates insights to quickly close gaps.
  • Manages the Company's response to union organizing drives; provides union vulnerability assessments and union avoidance training.
  • Provides performance management consulting
  • Partners to build onboarding plans for new leaders
  • Monitors KPIs and deploys resources based on evolving business needs
  • Partners with SVP Field Operations to execute people strategy for assigned zone
  • Assesses leadership development needs through on-site observations/in-store interactions
  • Maintains confidentiality of financial information, insurance and litigation documents, associate information (e.g., wage information, discipline, health information) and other sensitive and confidential information.
  • Oversees, coaches, and evaluates Field People Business Partners to ensure exceptional results and execution of key priorities.
  • Calibrates top/bottom performers with market leaders; partners and creates talent action plans to close gaps; aggressively monitors and reports progress
  • Champions change efforts and effectively leads team through change
  • Proactively minimizes legal risk to Company and helps drive labor strategy to align and achieve business strategic goals.
  • Ensures staffing plans and store complements are achieved by identifying and escalating to remove obstacles
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to ensure compliance with all applicable Federal/State/Local legislative requirements.
  • Maintains strong associate relations and fosters an inclusive, safe, and positive people culture.
  • Builds recommendations that improve performance; tracks and monitor’s progress; measures impact and shares best practices
  • Actively participates in the selection process and influences hiring managers to raise the talent bar and prioritize building diverse teams
  • Executes people programs (talent reviews, performance calibrations, merit and incentive awards, engagement surveys)
  • Leads a team of regional People Business Partners that travels to store locations 6 days per month (minimum requirement) to assess and build recommendations that improve engagement, retention, and performance


Attributes / Experience/ Qualifications

The selected candidate will be a highly inspiring, credible and experienced business leader with proven capability to drive results across their market. Specifically, the Director of People will have the following attributes, experiences and qualifications:

  • 10 -15 years' experience in Human Resources (Business Partner) in a geographically disbursed retail, manufacturing, or equivalent environment
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or a related field, or equivalent experience preferred
  • Pro-active and solutions oriented. Builds trust; connects with people; likeable, high confidence, low ego, coachable.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, collaboration skills and the ability to contribute within a team setting.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Well-developed written presentation, organization, and editing skills.
  • Experience handling associate relations issues and dealing with labor laws.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and achieve results through others.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with outstanding planning, prioritization, and time-management skills
  • Deep analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Has passion, high energy, ability to energize others, works smart, displays a sense of urgency, and has a high level of integrity.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Minimum 5 years HR leadership experience leading an HR Business Partner Team.
